Seeing this, I wonder if he got hit in the funny bone. Once upon a time I took a fastball off it and couldn't feel my arm for two innings (and was very thankful a ball wasn't hit to me during that time)

John Schneider says the ball caught Vladimir Guerrero Jr. “in a weird spot” on his elbow which made his arm feel numb at first. They’ll see how he feels tomorrow. For now, the initial X-ray was negative and Schneider feels like it’s good news. #BlueJays

Losing sucked, the game sucked, but maybe it weirdly turns out to be a good day for the Jays, considering no fracture for Vlad and only mild hamstring soreness for Cease. We’re maybe not entirely out of the woods here yet, but it could have been much much worse.

I keep saying it. Pitching was so broken back in the day. Look at the 1st pitch of the 1993 World Series. Velocity? Check! Command? Nowhere to be seen! This guy walked the leadoff hitter in Game 1! Unbelievable! 6 earned runs in a World Series game, with just 3 punchies? Sad!

I keep saying it. Pitching is so broken it's breathtaking. Just take a peek at the 1st pitch of the SD/LA game. Spin rate? Check! Velocity? Check! Command? Nowhere to be seen. I cannot explain how FAR from pitching this is. On the first pitch, hell the first inning, you are working your fastball around the zone to get a feel for the corners and your command. You might throw 2 of your 3-4 pitches but most nights April to September you don't show your arsenal in the first, you need to get hitters out a couple times. You hold on to the 3 and 4 pitches that you setup in the 1st AB and in the hitters ahead of a guy for later ABs. I am unsure I can explain just how far this one pitch, and the ENTIRE process behind it, is removed from pitching. Having said that I do NOT blame the pitchers. The game is to blame. When you're working on 300 million dollar deals hoping to get 150 innings from a guy, that tells ya all you need to know. It's certainly not an easy fix, nor a quick one, but from the draft to MLB there is ABSOLUTELY a process to 'fix' this crap. Not to mention fewer DL stints, fewer TJ surgeries and longer shelf life for SP.

A guess: Very plausible that surgery was on the table when Berríos first went for a second opinion and he chose rest/rehab and a chance to avoid the knife rather than immediate TJ. Not an unusual scenario for a pitcher, and he wouldn’t be the first to choose the path he did.

Should he have been shut down entirely and sooner is the question, coukd TJ have been prevented

Teams can’t compel players to go under the knife, and whether it happened now or a couple months ago doesn’t really matter a whole lot in the grand scheme.
I do wonder about some of the info they may have had last year.

What I do know is that no one detected the stress fracture until the WCB insurers did

While I understand how people would prefer this when Lukes and Barger are back (if no other injuries) but this would leave the Jays with 5 LHH OFs (Varsho, Piñango, Sanchez, Lukes, Barger) and just 1 RH bench option (Straw) who hits worse against LHP (this year to an extreme).
