The tenth month is October, but you wouldn't guess it by the name... For more number-related controversy, puzzles and general fun with maths in the pub, come to Christchurch MathsJam. We'll be meeting from 7pm this Tues 15th, at our usual spot in the Craft Embassy. See ya there!

Here's the challenge mode for all you math whizzes. Sample three numbers x, y, z uniformly at random in [0, 1], and compute (xy)^z. What distribution describes this result? Answer: It's uniform! I know how to prove it, but haven't yet found the "aha" style explanation where it feels expected or visualizable. If any of you have one, please send it my way and I'll strongly consider making a video on it. h/t @alonamit for this one.

My daughter had a nice problem in her high-school math club. Suppose you have 1000 white points and 1000 black points in the plane, no three collinear. Can you draw segments connecting them in pairs, from white to black, using each point just once, without any edges crossing?
