@ravenscimaven #RingofFireChallenge There are capsaicin receptors in your butt, as well as your mouth. 1. Can your butt distinguish the difference between Chili peppers, mustard, wasabi, black peppers, ginger etc? 2. Does your butt build a tolerance over time?

@ruima Wow that's amazing! I hope to do some grand adventures with my better half one day (waiting to get out of the trenches with the newborn) Younger me would have different connotations, going rim to rim

Been offline for a bit on a grand adventure! One of my goals for 45 was to do more challenging things with awesome friends. So this past weekend the hubby and I rallied a small group of amazing humans to hike the Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim. For anyone unfamiliar, Rim-to-Rim is about 24 miles / 39 km, from one rim down to the canyon floor and back up the other side, with roughly 11,000 feet / 3,350 meters of total elevation change. You’re hiking at roughly 3,000-9,000 feet of altitude the whole time, carrying 12-15 pounds in 40-100 degrees F heat and strong gusts of wind. If you do north-to-south like we did, the steep ascent comes at the end, climbing around 1,000 feet an hour when you are already very tired. It took us 13.5 hours from beginning to end, with a wakeup time of 330AM. So yes, it is a lot 😂 Teamwork makes the dream work! Everyone brought something someone else forgot, didn’t think of, or didn’t have enough of: snacks, electrolytes, medicine, Band-Aids, sunscreen, pacing, navigation, jokes, zen energy. I’m also just really grateful my body could do this less than 1.5 years postpartum, while honestly being too busy to train properly. I might have done one 1500 ft elevation hike with the baby as a proxy for the pack (not recommended!) I was starting to struggle the second half but actually finished quite strong because I was able to tap back into marathon training, focus on the climb in front of me, keep moving, stay injury-free, and not catastrophize. (Blisters? NBD. There's an Advil for that, lol) I've been of the strong conviction that middle age is the best age -- time to up the challenge, especially with people who make hard things feel possible!

@yotakeoldtales But, having done it, it's quite tolerable. In the army bunks, people sleep without aircon, with just a small fan. In a small room, I used a large fan to ensure constant airflow, and had strategically positioned bottles of ice, and the room would get fairly cool, and comfortable

@Celadonblues @EdLatimore The avg age is like 20, it’s not even close to 22min, probably closer to 30 & basic injuries are common place.

Also, here's a way to put this question to of running versus lifting to bed: Let's take an average couch potatoe. 5'11", 200 lbs. Never trained. 30 year old. What do you think would be easier for him to accomplish: A 22 mim 5k or benching bodyweight and squatting 1.5x bodyweight (about comparable, percentile wise)?
Ed Latimore@EdLatimore

I haven't run a marathon, but building cardiovascular capacity is orders of magnitude more difficult than building strength. And I like running more than lifting!

@BradfemlyWalsh I speak English and Chinese (including various dialects) and most of my friends are multilingual. We use pronunciation of the language we speak. E.g. Beijing vs Bei3 jing1

Dear fellow people who can speak other languages: is it pretentious to pronounce foreign words right? Like, I don't want to say 'Van goff' or 'Van Go' for Van Gogh, because that's not how it's said but do I sound a dick if I say Fon Hockh with the throat sound?

1. Ask them how they feel. 2. Listen intently. 3. Repeat what they said back to them, almost word for word, so they know you heard them. It works most of the time with toddlers. It also works on feeble-minded adults who spout nonsense.
Rayen@rayengroves

I’m genuinely so confused by people who say that a) their toddlers don’t have tantrums or b) my lack of discipline causes the tantrums bc the entire reason she’s throwing a tantrum is bc I’ve told her no and am not giving in. How are people circumventing this process?

🇨🇳 Ordered a small bowl of pea noodles (豌杂面) 🍜 for 18 RMB, but it felt like there was half a kilo of peas in it. The sauce was super thick and sticky, making it hard to mix properly. Needed full strength just to stir it 😂

One thing that I worry about for Singapore’s future is the lack of continuation for some of the best foods we have in the hawker culture I do see some “young-uns” taking up the mantle but there are some real OGs that are lacking successors One of my favourite prata store is at risk of dying out What’s one of your favourite hawker foods that may die off?

Is it ageist to say I absolutely do not trust old doctors? Once saw an old dentist about my constantly bleeding gums and he told me to drink more green tea and eat more fish - and of course, it turned out to be periodontitis.

I love how this Redditor writes an entire essay about how much she dislikes the superficial and transactional nature of adult friendships, while simultaneously being so deeply transactional in how they approach friendships.

Pretty incredible that, 3 full days after the trip ended, US official channels are still relentlessly posting positive content on Trump in China. Genuinely can't think of another foreign trip by a US president in recent years that the administration tried to hype so much. And, tellingly, it happened with remarkably little pushback from US media. Which suggests the era of reflexive China bashing in Washington may largely be behind us: we may slowly be arriving at the "acceptance" stage of the five stages of grief.

@fwmarqix How does a wrong bulb cause the entire apartment complex to lose power?

Me: I think my Japanese landlord believes I’m either a criminal or deeply incompetent. Friend: What did you do. Me: I tried to change a light bulb. Friend: How do you mess up changing a light bulb. Me: I don’t know, man, the apartment fought back. my first week living alone in Osaka, light in kitchen dies. simple task, normal adult responsibility, go to convenience store, buy light bulb with complete confidence despite understanding approximately 3% of the packaging. come home, unscrew old bulb. new bulb does not fit, okay fine, go back outside, buy another bulb. this one fits, victory. turn switch on, entire apartment loses power.🤦😂 silence, complete darkness. somewhere in the distance a dog barks like the universe itself is disappointed. Me: .…interesting.🤣 ten minutes later there is knocking at my door. landlord standing there in full emergency mode. tiny elderly Japanese man wearing slippers and concern. Landlord: Daijoubu?! Me: I think I attacked the electricity. he walks inside, looks at light fixture, looks at breaker, looks at me, with the expression of a man trying to understand how I survived childhood.😂 Landlord: You put wrong bulb. Me: Yes. Landlord: Very wrong bulb. Me: I’m gathering that. he fixes it in literally twelve seconds, light comes back on. Landlord: Okay now. Me: Thank you so much. he starts leaving, stops at door, turns back very slowly. Landlord: You cook? Me: …sometimes. Landlord: Maybe don’t tonight.
