Thrilled to announce AlphaFold 3 which can predict the structures and interactions of nearly all of life’s molecules with state-of-the-art accuracy including proteins, DNA and RNA. Biology is a complex dynamical system so modeling interactions is crucial blog.google/technology/ai/…

We’re excited to share that the RGC-ME Browser is live! The RGC-ME Browser offers allele frequencies, ancestry estimates, constraint metrics, and transcript annotations based upon a catalog of human protein-coding variations from the exome data of ~1M individuals.

Internal Pharma AI efforts at Sanofi 🧬 It can be easy to paint a caricature of Big Pharma companies as Leviathan institutions that aren't capable of internal innovation. Yes, many of the top companies are hundreds of years old (seriously: centuryofbio.com/p/drug-discove…), but that doesn't mean they aren't capable of pivoting and capitalizing on new waves of technologies. They've already had to do this several times to survive this long! Some of this will undoubtedly come from partnerships with new startups focused entirely on AI. Recently, @andrewpannu (the biotech market-map king 👑) put together a great overview of the dealmaking activity in this space: But external partnerships aren't the only strategy at play. Genentech made headlines when they brought the iconic computational biologist Aviv Regev in as Director of R&D. Sanofi has been going "all-in" with their AI strategy too, with a lot of signaling, deal-making, and even direct messaging from their CEO: "Our ambition is to become the first pharma company powered by artificial intelligence at scale, giving our people tools and technologies that focus on insights and allow them to make better everyday decisions." They've hired top computational biologists like @vagar112 whose recent work on LLMs for mRNA design has gotten a lot of attention. They also recruited Ziv-Bar Joseph to serve as their Head of R&D Data and Computational Sciences. I once dreamed of working with Ziv-Bar when he was a full-time professor of computational biology at Carnegie Mellon when I was researching graduate schools. He's the real deal. Yesterday, they released v3 of a preprint describing an active learning framework for ADMET optimization. With a new sampling strategy, they are able to quantify model uncertainty without any further training: Sanofi may currently be ahead of other Big Pharma companies in terms of vision, talent, and wide-spread adoption of AI so far. Still, there likely some interesting lessons for AI-first bio startups. Some of your main customers are clearly evolving. The build-vs-buy pendulum is in flux. Good AI alone won't sell—product clarity is essential. This likely means either deep focus on internal assets, or a crystal clear value proposition of what your model will do for the user. (@bwhite5290 has recently put out an awesome blog post on the latter strategy.) Recent Sanofi ML preprints: - CodonBERT: biorxiv.org/content/10.110… - Deep Batch Active Learning for Drug Discovery: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
