IMPORTANT: It appears there’s a chance that the Trump-Vance White House is going to defy a federal court order to allow Pope Leo’s top ally Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich and Catholic clergy to enter the Chicago-area ICE facility for Ash Wednesday Mass. This would be a historic confrontation between the American government and the Catholic Church.

NB: Anecdotally, it really does feel like something is stirring among American Catholics. I attended the same parish for Ash Wednesday Mass today that I did in 2019 — and the crowd was easily four times as large. The national data may not reflect it yet. But data often lags behind lived reality. Sometimes the Spirit moves before the spreadsheets do.
