@Disintegrator @kauljade Same. I was reading an audiobook by Ta-Nehisi Coates and had to keep rewinding bc he was sharing gems that I wanted to write down in my reading journal. I still haven’t finished that one because there were things he said that I wanted to unpack and just sit with.

@Disintegrator @kauljade For me, I don’t really feel like either is faster unless I raise the speed on the audiobook. I don’t read nearly as many audiobooks as I do physical or ebooks. I agree about getting distracted… I take a break if I’m unfamiliar with a word so I can add it to my dictionary app.

@ChicSheri @kauljade its different for everyone but reading a written book is much faster for me than listening to an audiobook. the only thing that slows me down with a written book is getting distracted; in that instance the audiobook keeps going on its own and so thats faster kinda.

@ChicSheri @kauljade So take my current read - it’s 450 pages and my kindle is telling me it will take me 4 hours. The audio is literally 13 hours. Even if I’m faster than average, even at half my speed you’ll beat the audio by 5 hours

@guiltyasginny @kauljade Libby does the same. I know how much time it takes me to read, which is why I said what I said. And now that I’m sitting with it & seeing the behavior of a lot of the ppl responding to my comment I’m starting to see why ppl don’t want to read nor participate in bookish spaces.

@ChicSheri @kauljade idk this feels true, kindle calculates how long a book will take you based off your reading speed and mine is routinely 3-5 hours, it just depends on the individual

@ChicSheri @kauljade For an average speed reader you’re going to read print far faster then someone could read an audiobook

@TheCinesthetic Lovecraft Country was such a bold mix of horror, history and social commentary, cancellation after one season still stings 🔥

@mirinziel @ulasdifficile @kauljade And as I said ppl often say they “read” audiobooks. Hence my response. And NO…we will not debate if audiobooks are reading or not bc that is not the point. Okay.

@ChicSheri @ulasdifficile @kauljade the tweet is about reading speeds of people, with audio books the speed is set. U can change it to 2x and the 6 hour long audio will be 3. 10 will be 5. This defeats the discussion on how people can read a book in 3-5 hours

@ulasdifficile @kauljade No. I’m saying that reading a book generally takes longer than 3-5 hours. This includes both audio and ebook/physical. Then… I’m saying that what could account for her quicker pace is reading an audiobook at 1.5x or 2x speed. K.

@ChicSheri @kauljade But you said audio books take longer? You assumed they’re using them and using them on high speed. 🤦🏻‍♂️ can’t they just read books???

@ChicSheri @bigtruckerking @RezLiza @kauljade It is not even an opinion. Reading aloud takes longer, because we pause and add emphasis when speaking. Words leaving our lips takes more time than words entering our heads. Extended dialogue slows audiobooks down to to a crawl.

@ulasdifficile @kauljade I’m not assuming. I’m offering one explanation as to why she may think that reading a book takes as little as 3 hours.

@drymartinitwist @bigtruckerking @RezLiza @kauljade Maybe for you. Some ppl read more slowly. And to suggest ppl who read slower than others are illiterate (while they are reading might I add) is asinine and speaks to you lack of critical thinking skills.

@purenigma @kauljade I’m not being rude. I’m being clear. I told you I wasn’t debating what is or isn’t reading and yet you tried to debate it, despite that not even being the point. It’s unnecessary.

@purenigma @kauljade I don’t care what you agree with or your opinion on what is or isn’t reading. The facts I stated remain regardless.

@ChicSheri @kauljade i .. am not . i’ve just never agreed with audiobooks being “reading” a book . you are listening to a book . i believe they actively use different parts of the brain . that is the MOST ok thing ever . but they are different . it’s not a bad thing to recognize .
