One Fair Wage: The Facts Mayor Brandon Johnson’s One Fair Wage ordinance is putting money back in workers’ pockets—spurring $6,600 in income growth for Chicago restaurant workers, the majority of whom are Black and Hispanic women living on the South and West Sides. Despite claims to the contrary, restaurants are not leaving Chicago. In fact, more restaurants are staying open. Since July 1, 2024, when the first pay increase took effect, the City has issued 1,574 new Retail Food Establishment licenses. The data shows continued restaurant industry growth and stability: • 81% of restaurant licenses were renewed in 2024. • 83% of restaurants renewed their licenses in 2025. And the industry continues to expand: • 2024: +680 net licenses • 2025: +664 net licenses More opportunity for workers. More restaurants opening their doors. Chicago moving forward.

Black and Brown women get unfairly blamed for a lot of things, and to blame them for the loss of business in Trump's economy is just absurd. If I have to veto something passed by ostensible Democrats to protect Black and Brown women, then veto it is. @onefairwage

Ald. Beale's claim on the floor is incorrect: There are more active hospitality employees in Chicago now than there was in July 2024 and we have not seen mass restaurant closures---active food business licenses have increased by more than 1,400 since One Fair Wage took effect.

Mayor Johnson's staff keep making this same claim to that somehow Chicago has added 1,344 licensed food establishments since 2023 but no idea where they get that. City's own data shows # of full service restaurants (aka where people tip) flat since 2020. chicagotribune.com/2026/03/18/joh…

Sincerely asking @ChicagoMPO - what is your source for City of Chicago specific “active hospitality employees” figures? I am not familiar with data that geographically specific being available from @BLS_gov or @IllinoisIDES but would love to see it if it exists! 🍻

Accountability starts at home. The Welcoming City Ordinance is more than a piece of paper, it’s a commitment to everyone who calls @Chicago home. Today’s vote is a crucial step for our communities to know that local law enforcement is working for them as we continue to drive down violence in our city and Protect Chicago from Trump's militarized immigration campaign.

On the CHA CEO vote: "Well look, this individual that was moved yesterday, many of the board members had not met with him. Community had not met with him. I have never met with him. This was orchestrated by one particular individual, and at a time in which housing is such a critical component of building safer and more affordable communities, we have to have an open and transparent process where everybody and all the stakeholders get to weigh in."
