Cambridge Analytica used a personality quiz app built by a Cambridge academic to hoover up not just the data of people who took the quiz but the data of all their friends too. Tens of millions of profiles. Psychological traits. Political vulnerabilities. All fed into targeting algorithms designed to find the cracks in people's worldview and push. Facebook knew about the breach for two years. Then, the day after Wylie went public, Facebook suspended his account. The whistleblower got banned. The company that built the surveillance operation carried on for another few weeks before collapsing under the weight of the scandal. Within days of the story breaking, Facebook lost over $100 billion in market value. Cambridge Analytica shut down. Mark Zuckerberg was hauled in front of the US Senate. Facebook eventually received a $5.1 billion fine from the FTC, the largest ever levied against a tech company at the time.
