📢Zola’s Honest Take on Mainoo’s Champions League Reaction:
Listen, I saw that clip of young Kobbie Mainoo celebrating their qualification to the Champions League and I was rolling on the floor laughing! The boy was so happy, so full of joy and I get it, because for Manchester United, it has been a long and painful wait. Coming back to Europe’s biggest stage after missing out feels like a big achievement for them right now.
But let me be real with you..
Qualifying for the Champions League is not the destination. It’s the bare minimum for a club of Manchester United’s size and history. The real question is: can they actually compete in it?
You have to give your best in the Premier League week in, week out. Consistency is what matters. You cannot be up and down like a yo-yo and then expect to go far in the Champions League. That competition punishes you the moment you show any weakness. The top teams Real Madrid, Bayern, City, Chelsea, Arsenal, even the big Italian and Spanish sides they are ruthless.
Let’s just be realistic here. With the way United have been this season, I don’t see them going deep and achieving any serious success in the Champions League. Reaching the quarter-finals or semi-finals? That would already be a massive overachievement for this current team.
They should enjoy qualifying, yes celebrate it, feel the buzz but the real work starts now. Focus on building consistency in the league, improve the squad, and develop that winning mentality again. Because just being in the Champions League is not enough. You have to perform when you get there.
That’s the difference between a big club that is back… and a big club that is actually competitive again.
