My Hoverfly season got under way yesterday, with my first Criorhina ranunculi of the year at Savernake forest.

Not many better ways to start our trip than by twitching this showy Northern Hawk-Owl. Having not been seen since the 24th Feb, landing on the 7th March to news from @TarvoValker that it'd reappeared meant for the best possible start to our trip! Where the Owl theme started...

A Major D Minor day. Wonderful to watch this male Lesser Spotted Woodpecker performing its butterfly-like display flight on a beautiful frosty morning in The Brecks.

Great views of the Bittern yesterday afternoon at Lee Valley Country Park. It enjoyed the fishing in front of the visitor centre, especially this sizeable Perch!

Great Grey Shrike from last weekend in the New Forest. Not sure I'll get any better images of one especially in flight. It was hunting dragonflys so when it drifted off I got postioned by the pond edge and it came back and hovered in front of some autumn silver birches.

I have posted this photo of the Turkestan Shrike we had for eight days at Dunwich heath, only to show how you can get the best out of a poor light day. This was taken when it was cloudy right at the end of the day the light goes flat and this enables you to get a better expossure
