After a six-year legal battle with Harvard University, Tamara Lanier has won ownership of two of the earliest known photographs of enslaved people in the United States. The images, taken in 1850, depict an enslaved man named Renty Taylor and his daughter Delia Taylor. They were originally commissioned by Harvard biologist Louis Agassiz as part of research rooted in racist pseudoscience aimed at promoting theories of Black inferiority. For decades, the portraits remained in Harvard’s possession and were widely reproduced in academic settings. But Lanier, who says she is a direct descendant of Renty and Delia, challenged the university’s ownership in court, arguing that the images were taken without consent and belonged to the family. Now, after years of legal fights and public pressure, Harvard has agreed to relinquish the photographs to Lanier, marking a significant moment in the ongoing conversation about historical accountability, ownership, and the legacy of slavery in American institutions. In our current issue, we uplift and celebrate the legacy and scholarship of Marlene Cunha, a pathfinding Black Brazilian anthropologist and activist whose work has often been under-recognized in the Brazilian academy and in anglophone North American anthropology.

He insinuated and successfully gaslit people, particularly Africans, who didn’t trust him because they could sense his exploitative and extractive nature. In my opinion, his presence fuels conspiracy theories because of very legitimate concerns about who he is as a person.

Baby, Zora Neale Hurston started that novel with, "Ships at a distance have every man's wish on board." Toni Morrison opened on, "Quiet as it's kept, there were no marigolds in the fall of 1941." Black women writers just KNEW how to start a novel. Lord let us keep those recipes.

@pillsho_ @hitmanMW @nessa_sandraa If anyone is interested, I’d be happy to share my late uncle’s 1974 PhD dissertation on the precolonial history of the Ngonde Kingdom. It might help to dispel some of the misconceptions/ stereotypes of Africans lacking skills, trade, & development prior to European colonization.

Re: academic ethics, if you’re a scholar with a large following & your contribution to online on race discourse incites targeted pile ons or racist attacks against specific groups, then a risk assessment should determine what mitigations are needed to reduce the risk of harm…

These are the dynamic Togolese women merchants I’m writing about in my book! My work uses the women’s individual life histories to historicize how they built & leveraged thier economic power to shape W.African politics from the late colonial period through the neoliberal era. ✍🏿

When I hear stories of Togolese Nana Benz and major west African women in trade, I remember my late paternal grandmother whom I never met but I met her wares. She was so rich that 20 years after she died, we still had her unsold bales of fabrics and exotic drinks in the house.
