@karpathy It would need a bottom-up revamp of the DevX. Audio is the better modality for programming with AI. Reading the code / text-prompting is the bottleneck in the current DevX. No amount of additional rectangles is going to fix that. We need code that's easy to comprehend as audio.

Expectation: the age of the IDE is over Reality: we’re going to need a bigger IDE (imo). It just looks very different because humans now move upwards and program at a higher level - the basic unit of interest is not one file but one agent. It’s still programming.
Andrej Karpathy@karpathy

@nummanali tmux grids are awesome, but i feel a need to have a proper "agent command center" IDE for teams of them, which I could maximize per monitor. E.g. I want to see/hide toggle them, see if any are idle, pop open related tools (e.g. terminal), stats (usage), etc.

@tunguz In my experience the org size has always been inversely proportional to speed of execution.

We've reached the point in software development where it's far far easier for a small cracked team to actually build a product than for any team in a big co get the "approval" from "all the relevant stakeholders". This will have major consequences for most incumbents.

@elonmusk Inevitable! It's like handing people F1 cars who have only ever driven bicycles, and hoping they will cover the distances much faster without accidents.

@shrav_10 A compressed mattress occupies less volume than an uncompressed one, but you can't sleep on it. Same goes for files. They are easier to store/ship while being compressed, but they need to be uncompressed before use. We keep them uncompressed to save compute-time.

Quick question: 10GB file -> 3GB after zip. No data lost. So was the original file wasting 7GB?

Sam Altman was fired by his own board. His co-founder Ilya left. His top researchers left to start Anthropic. His head of alignment quit. He dissolved the safety team and its replacement. He converted a nonprofit into an $850B for-profit. He removed 'safely' from the mission statement. His employees begged him to stand with Anthropic. He said he would. That night he took the deal they refused. Then announced it on X like a victory lap. And you still think this man is building AI for humanity?

Tonight, we reached an agreement with the Department of War to deploy our models in their classified network. In all of our interactions, the DoW displayed a deep respect for safety and a desire to partner to achieve the best possible outcome. AI safety and wide distribution of benefits are the core of our mission. Two of our most important safety principles are prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and human responsibility for the use of force, including for autonomous weapon systems. The DoW agrees with these principles, reflects them in law and policy, and we put them into our agreement. We also will build technical safeguards to ensure our models behave as they should, which the DoW also wanted. We will deploy FDEs to help with our models and to ensure their safety, we will deploy on cloud networks only. We are asking the DoW to offer these same terms to all AI companies, which in our opinion we think everyone should be willing to accept. We have expressed our strong desire to see things de-escalate away from legal and governmental actions and towards reasonable agreements. We remain committed to serve all of humanity as best we can. The world is a complicated, messy, and sometimes dangerous place.

Very little about software engineering has changed over past last three months. A great deal has changed about coding, not unlike when we saw the rise of high order programming languages and compilers, the difference today being that the number of developers is far larger and distribution channels are such that the velocity and breadth of change is far greater. The entire history of software engineering is one of raising the level of abstraction.
Jared Friedman@snowmaker

Software engineering changed more in the last 3 months than the preceeding 30 years. Everything about running a software company needs to be rethought from first principles.

"Art is the expression of man's pleasure in labour" Reading "News from Nowhere" by William Morris. The introduction itself is filled with some amazing quotable lines. Very relevant for the times we are in.

Design inspiration is a great way to kick off a new project. It helps you get grounded, explore the space, and build excitement for what’s ahead. How to use design inspiration to guide your next project: Start broad - Explore many styles and references to understand the landscape. - Save ideas (right into your @Figma file) that feel alive and relevant, not just beautiful. - Notice recurring ideas; they show what feels familiar to your audience. Then narrow in - Focus on references that fit your project’s challenge and tone. - Share good examples to align and inspire your team. - Combine proven patterns and fresh ideas to create something original. Inspiration helps you see the bigger picture and spot what might work for your project, guiding you toward clearer, more grounded decisions. everydayux.net/design-inspira…

@saradietschy Why not just use Exporter apps.apple.com/gb/app/exporte… to backup your Apple Notes somewhere other than iCloud and not worry about losing Apple Notes to iCloud glitches? I think fragmented note-taking systems are harder to maintain in the long run.

Ok can I give a productivity tool stack update after Apple Notes broke my heart? For a 1 person content op working w/ several freelancers: - Never ending Target shopping lists and "one day" work wishes - Things - Anything quick & personal that I won't cry if it disappears (like scripts) - Apple Notes - Everything Work - Notion - Anything external - Google (GDrive, Docs/Sheets) - Messages - email & text (iMessage/Whatsapp) Slack might sneak it's way back into my heart but trying to keep this as simple as possible.
