@awealthofcs Seriously? (referring to 1974), no wonder both sides got behind the Motor Carrier Act of 1980. I have heard of Teamsters earning $58K in 1977. (That said, it was the result of working over 65 hours a week, and taking every holiday)

@PEEOTUS8 @BeschlossDC @NBCNews Actually, when he did the segment on CNBC, Brian Sullivan did mention that. The point I was looking for was that Prez JEC pushed congress to get him a Motor Carrier Dereg bill, they did, and he signed in 1980. IMHO, nothing has done more to contain inflation than that law.

@awealthofcs Ben, you have smart listeners. A lot of good input here. I agree mostly with those who consider the possibility of accidents. Not only do 16-17 year olds do extremely stupid things while driving, but even when driving well, they have not mastered driving defensively.

@horrormuseum When I was working on my BA in Business, I had to watch my nephew, and he noticed my Accounting book. He asked, "Uncle JP, what does an accounter do?" I said "He counts! Counting, counting, vun two three four, vun two three four!". He now has his MBA. Works in Finance.

@Kasparov63 When Saigon fell, my Vietnamese wife and her family were living in Tokyo. This explains exactly why my FiL wanted to come to the US, rather than stay in Japan or move to France. When he was naturalized, it was the first time he was a "citizen". Prior, he was a "subject".

@RexChapman Pretty much explains why I am not a football fan. This, and what happened to the Bears on Sunday.

@kylascan Now, the really difficult thing to assess is, "Do drivers of oversized vehicles, (pickups & SUVs) drive more aggressively?"

For me, I really don’t like Large Pickup Trucks (for a variety of reasons) but I notice them everywhere. Confirmation bias and selective attention leads to frequency illusion - I think there are a lot of trucks zooming around bc I am obsessed with them. But - there aren’t that many. Sure, the segment is growing quickly (20% of cars in 2022, up from 16% in 2016), but it’s still a small % of total vehicles. BUT I think there are a LOT and that they are taking over the streets. I am wrong. But I am going to be angry and make decisions based off that illusion. Falling prey to an illusion.

I often hear folks say, “Donald Trump sent me a check during the pandemic.” I want to make sure you understand this: Congress sent you a check. By the way, Joe Biden also sent you a check during the pandemic, just like I gave people relief during the Great Recession. The difference is that we didn’t put our names on it – because it wasn’t about feeding our egos or advancing our politics, it was about helping people. So don’t be giving him credit for that. And don’t give him your vote, either. There’s only one candidate in this election who cares about you, and that’s Kamala Harris.

@maddenifico I like that he implies an understanding that there are checks and balances and constraints on the Presidency, and that the person in that position is not responsible for everything and cannot just "do" what they want.

@Chicago_History UGH! Brings back bad memories of when my father was aging, probably should not have been driving any longer. Mis-judged a turn and wound up with his car straddling an island.

@mariashriver @ChrisDJackson My FiL worked for USOM/USAID in Saigon, 1955 into Nov, 1967. After he & family moved to DC in 1975, he was invited to a cocktail party at her home, (I think 1976) where he met George HW Bush. It was a point of pride for him. He passed away August 2, this year.

That MB factory-- - Is in Alabama, not SC (that's BMW) - Employs 6300 Americans & indirectly supports 10k other US jobs in the region - Invested more than $6B in the US economy (so far) - Produced 4M vehicles in the US since 1997 - Buys from almost 200 US-based suppliers

Trump: Mercedes-Benz… in South Carolina. They build everything in Germany and they assemble it here... They don’t build cars. They take them out of a box and assemble them. Could have our child do it.
