So @Zimfest has taken another knock again with the local press of the area in which it was hosted. And what’s sad here is that - again - it wasn’t down to any real failures by the organisers and their partners, but everything to do with the culture snd behaviour of some attendants from within our Zimbabwean community. In the case of this edition in Northampton, the issue appeared to be our penchant with cars, perhaps a carryover from our Zimbabwean experience of the unreliability of public transport. And yet, this event was held near the town centre and therefore very accessible by public transport. A spokesperson for Delapré Abbey, Ms Nichols, said the problem was not the number of people attending, but the number of vehicles arriving. I parked in the town centre and walked to the venue. On the way, I joined friends in their car but the gridlocked traffic forced some of us to disembark and make it to the venue on foot, which was a very short walk. As for the rowdy behaviour of some revellers after the event, again it’s an unfair one for Zimfest organisers to bear, because this really speaks to the character and culture of the Zimbabwean community itself. People ought to behave decently, and being an immigrant community, particularly in this prevailing political at atmosphere that is hostile towards immigrants in Britain, any sort of anti-social behaviour, however limited to a few malcontents, is amplified and used as justification by politicians on local council to deny us venues for our cultural events. We need to normalise not driving to events where public transport exists and is reliable. Perhaps organisers all year round need to run behaviour change campaigns to encourage our community to move away from the culture of driving to events where other reliable means of transportation exist or can be organised. northamptonchron.co.uk/news/people/tr…

I strongly condemn the shameless behaviour displayed by some of our people after ZIMFEST because it embarrasses not only those involved, but all of us as a community. I am genuinely embarrassed watching these scenes at a service station, a place where motorists are supposed to stop, refuel, pay, and leave. Instead, these individuals invaded the fuel service station and behaved in a manner that is completely unacceptable. This also puts the organisers of ZIMFEST in an extremely difficult position. They organised a fantastic event that showcased Zimbabwean culture, music, and talent, only for a small group of people to undermine all that goodwill afterwards. Some people were defecating and urinating in front of residents’ homes, while others gathered at the service station and behaved disgracefully. These are not children. They are adults who should know better. This is exactly the kind of behaviour that gives Zimbabweans a bad name. The actions of a few unfairly taint the reputation of an entire community. The fact that the Northampton Chronicle & Echo newspaper has reported on these incidents shows that this is no longer just an internal matter; it has become a public reflection on all of us. Conduct like this makes it harder for Zimbabwean communities to secure support from local councils and venues when organising future festivals, concerts, or other cultural events. It undermines years of hard work by organisers and volunteers who strive to build a positive image of Zimbabweans abroad. There is simply no excuse for this behaviour. It is disgraceful, deeply embarrassing, and completely unacceptable. Those responsible should be ashamed of themselves, because their actions have damaged the reputation of an entire community.

You’re right about the ambitions, particularly of those around the president, to push for such measures as would perpetuate their power and influence. But in E.D’s case, once he falls away, there’s no one around him with the kind of authority that would make living, entitled securocrats who actually fought to liberate Zimbabwe, acquiesce to it. We will have another coup, without a doubt, or a violent clash between factions of the securocracy.

The reason why you don’t see anything wrong with this sort of behaviour is because you’re bringing what you see as normal in your own country to another country that does not condone this behaviour. The whole culture war the Rightwing political wave is pushing in the UK today is based on restoring British culture and values, which they see as having been destroyed by huge levels of immigration. So such unBritish behaviour as this anti-social behaviour at a fuel forecourt is the perfect example to the Right of what they mean when they say these immigrants have brought crude and unBritish behaviours to their country and therefore they need to throw them out and re-assert British values!

Precisely. You can hear it in the tone of the Northamptoon councillor who is championing the residents’ complaints. She appears to question why these people were allowed to host their event in our community in the first place and then be disruptive in a way that mainstream British events held at the dame venue do not do. In short, they’ll be saying why host an event that allows in an influx of people who are not from our culture and who will not behave as we do?

That’s where the main problem is. People drive themselves to events where they will drink and then drive themselves back home under the influence. We have a culture of disobeying laws, which is contrary to the general British attitude. If police had chosen to set up a breathalyser station at the exit, most drivers would have abandoned their vehicles for fear of being caught out.

History will record him as a Finance Minister befitting the era after the highly contested land reform, loss of local currency to hyperinflation and Western economic sanctions blockade. Best Finance Ministers are those not well-liked; popular Finance Ministers are consumerists. You can all throw your toys out of the pram; @MthuliNcube01 has got the Zimbabwean economy back on its feet. The macro entities are now in shape; what is now left is a single currency that creates an ecosystem of all other market entities that sets the equilibrium for sustainable growth that everyone else can enjoy; there are time lags to that. Zimfest is a great event that has achieved much, and it has distinguished us from other African communities in the UK in terms of creating and sustaining a festival to celebrate our music and culture and sustaining it for a quarter of a century! The issues highlighted in this report pertain to the behaviour of a few individuals out of over 10,000. It would be inaccurate and unfair to characterise Zimfest by this report on the behaviour of a few individuals. On the whole, it continues to be an ever-improving and well organised cultural experience.

We’ve seen worse around stadiums after football matches here in England, by rowdy and often disruptive natives. Police have to be deployed to keep the peace after football matches in many communities in this country. Harmless twerking by tipsy revellers isn’t such an egregious sight to witness.
