If their house is much larger than they need, downsizing, or renting rooms out, would give them money. Expecting the state to fund someone's lifestyle because they won't sell their over-sized house is fiscally reckless.

By 2027, there will be 3million pensioners who pay higher or additional rate tax. These people, by definition, are in the top 20% of all UK earners. Yet they will still receive a £12K a year state pension, in a direct transfer of cash from the poorer young to the wealthier old.

Those who wouldn't struggle to get by shouldn't be getting guaranteed above-inflation, above-wage amounts from the state every year. If it were any other benefit, there wouldn't be a question.
