@politicalmath Because the view that the subjective opinion a professional film critic matters is ridiculous.

My teens wanted to watch a horror movie so we watched The Shining, which sent me down a rabbit trail Critics *hated* The Shining when it was released. Siskel gave it 2 stars. Variety said Kubrick "destroyed all that was so terrifying about the King novel". One critic called it "Shallow, self-conscious, and dull. Read the book". Kubrick was nominated for "Worst Director" at the first Razzie awards I find all of this insane. In imdb, The Shining is rated as one of the top 100 movies of all time. It is seared into our collective memory with "all work and no play" and "Here's Johnny" and "red rum". Somehow Kubrick made a horror movie that every "smart" person hated when it came out and yet endured as one of the great movies of all time. How do you do that?

@salowa87 An indian guy in 1926- White family across the road moved out. Another family of whites moved in yesterday. Sigh. I mean, what was I expecting? When the time comes to move, I'm checking ONS data. I want to live among my own people. I'm tired of whites invading & looting our land

@lizyeld @BrianCPT @AndrewGold_ok You’re suggesting that the woman is a liar. Just because you’re not using profanity that doesn’t make you a nice person. On the contrary; you are scum.

This is NOT Viagogo. This is FIFA’s official resale platform. $25,000 for a Category 4 ticket in the nosebleeds that originally cost $75… plus a $3.7k fee ON TOP. How is this even allowed? How are resale prices not capped? This is the worst kind of exploitation of fans.

@FalunInfoCtr @EpochTimes Actually the Ancient Romans invented it, along with the state health service. Every Roman soldier needed to be able to read and write and do basic mathematics and read a map and pass a medical. In the 1500's the British read the Greco-Roman classics in conjunction with the Holy Bible and it led to a golden age, rather than what we're in over the last 113 years.

Britain invented free schooling for every child. 1560. 🇬🇧 Rich or poor. Every parish. Every child. The idea spread to America. To Africa. All around the world. It started with a man who spent 19 months chained to an oar on the North Sea. Be Proud Of Us. 🇬🇧

See, scum like you demand that certain people (white people, British people, American people) be blamed for the actions of their forefathers. But ONLY blamed, and to not receive by the same token credit for the good things their forefathers did. You’re a racist, and a moron. So 🤫🤫🤫

Can't you take some accountability? You for example systematically destroyed Iran to steal the oil. After systematically colonizing the region in 1914 after you nationalized Anglo-Persian Oil Company and legislated the British Navy be supplied by oil from it. You can be proud of the good things you've done but can't you take some public responsibility for the complete disasters you've pushed on the world? You tore religious freedom apart and any progress towards secularism (such as that made by the USA since 1791, a country you since re-annexed) by stealing and giving Palestine away only to get a foothold in the middle East so you could steal the oil. But we should be proud because supposedly someone suggested public education in the 1500s? Britain has done good things but you've also done unspeakably bad things for which you don't take responsibility. theguardian.com/us-news/2023/o…

Olimpio Ernesto, an Angolan national, raped a 16-year-old girl in Victoria Park. As a Glaswegian woman, I can't begin to describe how much I despise what this city has become. Our girls aren't safe because of these filthy rats. Glasgow should hang its head in shame.

Come on, Derek. Firstly that’s a straw man. No-one’s suggesting some countries should have automatic qualification. Secondly, there is obvious aura/pedigree around some countries. A World Cup without Brazil would be odd, for example. And I’m sure you enjoy a World Cup less without Scotland there. And without Germany, you’d also feel a gap.

Not everyone will see it this way but the World Cup has never been - and should never be - akin to a select invitation list with preferred guests. 74/78/94 no England, 82/86 no Netherlands after back-to-back finals, now 3 times in a row, no Italy. We enjoyed them all anyway.

@RaeComm WC is better without this mentally weak side. People that say it is a loss for the WC are blinded by the past, this is not 2006 or 1982 Italy. Italy may very well never qualify again.

• You played your final match at the age of 28 and had to quit football due to injury. By that time you already won 3 Ballon d'Ors. The world was at your feet, for which club would you have still liked to play? 🚨🗣️ 𝗡𝗘𝗪: Van Basten: "None. I would have kept on playing at AC Milan and I would have ended my career at AC Milan, I wouldn't have left for any other club."

630 people drowned in the Irish Sea in one night. ⛵💀 A British man studied the data afterwards. And invented something that every single person on earth uses every single day. On 25 October 1859 the Royal Charter was hit by a hurricane off Anglesey. 450 people died. That same storm destroyed 133 ships and killed nearly 800 people around Britain in a single night. Robert FitzRoy was head of Britain's Meteorological Office. He went through every piece of data from that night. And he realised something that stopped him cold. He could have predicted it. 🌊 So he built a network of 15 coastal weather stations around Britain, each one connected to London by telegraph. Every morning they wired their readings in. Pressure. Temperature. Wind direction. Cloud. He began to see patterns nobody had ever seen before. On 1 August 1861 The Times newspaper carried something completely new. A prediction of tomorrow's weather. FitzRoy called it a forecast. Not a prophecy. A calculation. 📰 He hoisted storm warning cones at every major British port. When the cones went up, fishing boats stayed in harbour. Lives were saved. How many? Nobody will ever know. Today every country on earth publishes a daily weather forecast. Every app on every phone. Every "chance of rain" anywhere on earth. The word forecast itself. All of it invented by a British man who decided we would be prepared next time. 🇬🇧 This history has no budget. No broadcaster. No institution behind it. Just the people who believe it deserves to exist. Support the channel: proudofus.co.uk/support Be Part Of Us. ☝️ Be Proud Of Us. 🇬🇧

HILARIOUS: Reporter: “Iranian government threatened a bunch of U.S. companies in the region today.” President Trump: “With what? What did they threaten them with? BB guns or? They don't have much left to threaten.” Reporter: “My question for you is—” President Trump: “You made a statement. What did they threaten them with? I don't know. Tell me. How did they threaten them?” Reporter: “All I know is that they threatened them, sir.” President Trump: “What does that mean?” Reporter: “Fair enough.” President Trump: “They said something nasty?” Reporter: “Are you helping to back stop them?” President “Trump: You don't even know what the threat was. What was the threat? I haven't heard it. What was the threat? Did they say they're going to blow them up? You know what they're not going to do? They're not going to hit them with a nuclear weapon.”
