@BradRTorgersen Part of what made| to Borg so scary in "Q Who" is that until then we'd only seen the ENT fire it's main phasers a couple of times and yet the ship breaks the tractor beam by leaving three galaxy class holes in the cube that they only had to sit and take an hour breather to fix.

The Ferengi were silly as villains because they didn't represent a visceral threat anyone could recognize. "Yankee traders" with big ears and laser whips? Capitalist scourge! It was stupid. But the Borg? The Borg were something else entirely. A great, new villain in the franchise's menagerie of villains. Relentless. Uncaring. Unfeeling. A bit like Saberhagen's Berserkers, but worse. A machine mind which gobbles up cities, worlds, and races. Making them all part of itself. Including you, gentle viewer. Nowhere in the galaxy is safe. You cannot run far enough. The Borg come for all. It's only a matter of time.

Now, we debate which franchise has done more damage to its own legacy. We used to rank the original trilogy against The Next Generation. Now, we rank the disappointments: the sequel trilogy, Ahsoka, and The Acolyte vs. "Picard" Seasons 1 & 2 and 5 seasons of "Discovery." We used to cosplay our heroes with pride. Now, we're cosplaying as outraged ex-fans. We used to quote lines to inspire. Now, we quote them ironically to dunk on the new canon. We used to build models of the Enterprise or the Millennium Falcon. Now, we build YouTube videos about how both are dead franchises walking. We used to say “May the Force be with you” or “Live long and prosper” like blessings. Now, we say RIP to what they used to represent. The golden age is over. And nobody’s winning the argument anymore. Because both sides lost.
