MEET THE TEAM 👩‍🔬 Today we meet Lola Gonzalez-Penades, our Plant Breeding Pathologist. 1️⃣ What got you into the plant breeding world? During my BSc of Biology in Spain, I realised I wanted to focus on plant research. I came to the UK as an Erasmus student at the University of East Anglia, where I discovered the great quality of plant research that the John Innes centre was offering. This is where I chose to study the MSc on Plant Genetics and Crop Improvement, which gave me the first insight into the plant breeding world. Following this, I had the opportunity to direct my career into the world of wheat genetics and pathology by doing a PhD focused on identifying genes in wheat conferring resistance to a fungal pathogen. 2️⃣ What do you think is the next thing across the industry and why? As a wheat pathologist, I would like to be on top of the potential emergent diseases that may be a threat, not just for the UK wheat market but also abroad. This is so we can make sure we develop wheat varieties with a specific combination of traits which adapt to different environments and fulfil consumer needs. 3️⃣ What do you like to do in your free time? I am a very active and social person. In my free time you can find me running or doing functional training in the park. I really enjoy being outdoors in nature, and venturing to discover new places. If I find that it is a warm place and next to the sea it would be even better, as I could enjoy reading a good book whilst listening to the sea waves! 4️⃣ What has been your biggest accomplishment so far? The biggest accomplishment is that the team is pleased! Work must be done to meet the deadlines, but I really value a friendly and supportive environment at work with good communication. The team are working hard to improve and implement new protocols. Working with a seasonal crop is teaching us about logistics, project planning, perseverance and, most importantly, being patient.
