Sadly it does not happen immediately and several factors are at play. There are discrepancies regarding the Constitutional rights of provinces, but it is clear that AB owns its own resources, and that the Indigenous have already ceded their lands, so they can choose to keep dealing with Canada or with the new AB government. The idea is that if a majority votes to separate, then the government should in good faith start negotiations, and the process would begin. The problem Canada has it that it is Parliamentary and it is running off a Constitution that is no longer effective. It was designed by the federal government to empower the federal government, and our provinces do not have the same types of independent powers as your states have. Our system is flawed in that the heavily populated can always outvote the more sparsely populated provinces. Overall, however, if the majority vote for separation is there, I think it is clear that hands are going to be forced. Alberta is tired of the bullshit.
