If my parents hadn’t divorced…I would not have this house. I still remember the day my mom moved to this house. She was full of regret. I said, “Mummy, why the long face?” “I never thought I would have to buy my own house,” mummy said. All her life the only narrative she knew around home ownership as a woman was this: you marry, you move into a house with your husband, your husband’s house is your house. This single story was so powerful in her mind that even when she accomplished the feat of buying a house of her own, she did not immediately see it as a marker of success. To her at the time, the house was proof that she had failed to stay in her husband’s house. Thankfully, I was around to snap her out of the mindset.
