For 14 years Blackpool was a poster child for government failure. We have lived through the consequences of decisions made in Westminster. We have felt sharply the pressures of insecure work, poor housing, rising living costs and overstretched public services and we have felt forgotten. But if Blackpool became an example of how badly politics can fail people, it can also be an example of what happens when government gets it right. We have the opportunity to make Blackpool the poster child for our country's success and prove that when Blackpool succeeds, Britain succeeds. 📺 youtu.be/_Sk_wzXCOZU

Like I said last time, Andy should be allowed to put his name forward to members in the Makerfield by-election. I urge the NEC to make the right decision so we can win this by-election for Labour.
Andy Burnham@AndyBurnhamGM

I can confirm that I will be requesting the permission of the NEC to stand in the Makerfield by-election. I grew up in this area and have lived here for 25 years. I care deeply about it and its people. I know they have been let down by national politics. Ten years ago, I decided to leave Westminster. Why? Because, after 16 years, I came to the conclusion that our national political system does not work for areas like ours. I learnt this fighting its failure to invest in the Wigan borough, for justice for the Hillsborough families and against its treatment of Greater Manchester during the pandemic. Over the last decade, I have been challenging this failure from the outside and building a new and better way of doing politics. We have built Greater Manchester into the fastest-growing city-region in the UK and put buses back under public control, introducing a £2 fare cap to help people with cost-of-living pressures. However, there is only so much that can be done from Greater Manchester. Much bigger change is needed at a national level if everyday life is to be made more affordable again. This is why I now seek people’s support to return to Parliament: to bring the change we have brought to Greater Manchester to the whole of the UK and make politics work properly for people. Millions are struggling and they need the Labour Government to succeed. It has already made changes to make life better for them in its first two years. After this week, we owe it to people to come back together as a Labour movement, giving the Prime Minister and the Government the space and stability they need as the by-election takes place. I want to recognise the difficult decision taken by Josh Simons and the sacrifice he and his family are making. I have worked closely with him as Mayor on issues like flooding and illegal waste dumping and have seen first-hand how effective he has been. He has put the communities of Makerfield first, made a real difference for them and should take great pride in that. Finally, I truly do not take a single vote for granted and will work hard to regain the trust of people in the Makerfield constituency, many of whom have long supported our party but lost faith in recent times. We will change Labour for the better and make it a party you can believe in again. ENDS

I’m so happy for Angela now that she’s finally been cleared of any wrongdoing. We’ve been friends for more than two decades - long before either of us entered politics and she’s always been a woman of integrity, honesty, and decency. She’s dedicated her life to public service and helping others, which makes the way she was treated all the more awful. A lot of people owe her an apology.

EXCL: Angela Rayner says she has been cleared of any deliberate wrongdoing by HMRC. 🚨 And she’s not ruling out a bid for No10.🚨 In her first TV interview she insists there has been NO DEAL with Andy Burnham.

I welcome HMRC’s conclusion, which has cleared me of any wrongdoing. I have been exonerated by HMRC of the accusation that I deliberately sought to avoid tax. When purchasing a home of my own with a mortgage, I did not own any other property and had no personal financial interest in the court-instructed trust set up to manage my son’s financial award. I was advised by experts that I should pay stamp duty at the standard rate. I set out to pay the correct amount of tax. I took reasonable care and acted in good faith, based on the expert advice I received, and HMRC has accepted this. I have always sought to act with integrity, and I believe politicians should be held to high standards - that is why I resigned from government and cooperated fully with HMRC.  I wanted to ensure that I paid every penny that I owed, and have done so. I am relieved that my family can now move on - and that I can get on with my job.

An excellent speech today by @ChrisWebbMP #blackpool South, in the debate on the loyal address. He set out the problems families in Blackpool face and what the govt is doing to improve their lives. He also called for action to protect local taxi drivers and support for tourism

This afternoon I’m at the @cwuha AGM in my role as a Trustee for the charity. For more than 30 years, CWUHA has supported children living in poverty across the UK, Europe and Africa - delivering humanitarian aid directly to those children who need it most. Today we’re also hearing from Holly Smith at @UKMed about their lifesaving work in Gaza, and the partnership support CWUHA has provided to help deliver vital medical aid.

Today is #InternationalNursesDay. 👩‍⚕️ I’m proud to support nursing staff across the world. Thank you for the skill, dedication and professionalism you show every day. International Nurses’ Day is one of the most important moments in the nursing calendar. It is a chance to recognise the value of nursing, the pressures facing the profession, and the importance of standing with nursing staff across health and care. Nurses are the backbone of our NHS and healthcare. They care for people at their most vulnerable, support families through difficult moments, and keep services going under huge pressure. Whether in our hospitals, GP surgeries, care homes or community services, their contribution is impossible to overstate. 💜

We will be judged on our actions, not just words.  We have to show that we understand the scale of response the moment calls for. Labour exists to make working people better off. That is not happening fast enough. And needs to change now. Proud to address #CWU26

Two years ago today the people of Blackpool South voted for change – you wanted honesty, transparency and a person who truly believed in and cared about our town representing you in Parliament. You put your trust in me and I’m still so grateful you did. chriswebb.org/news/two-years…

I’ve issued a statement following the sentencing of the individual arrested at my jobs fair in February. Abuse and intimidation have no place in our community or our democracy.
