It was an honour to be invited to deliver the keynote speech at the 40th anniversary @NEF celebrations this week, where I spoke about the power of devolution. After forty years, NEF's mission may be unfinished. But it is more vital than ever.

Our economy doesn’t work for ordinary people because we have been on the wrong path for far too long.  The consequences have been corrosive: a loss of trust in institutions, people feeling left behind and forgotten. The truth is that we have too often been timid – tinkering around the edges of a broken system. But by avoiding structural change, we risk confirming the right-wing populists’ narrative: that “the establishment can only do more of the same”. When the British people voted in a Labour Government just two years ago, they voted not just against a Tory government that did not stand up for their interests but for political change that touched their lives. They were disillusioned by a system that is rigged against them, and which they want us to transform. We have since then too often left the impression that we found ourselves defending the status quo rather than challenging it. Leaving the seeds of anger, frustration, and resentment to be harvested by those promising something far more toxic. We cannot build a new economy here without addressing one of the root causes of the old one’s failure. Too many decisions affecting the many are made by too few. We are one of the most over-centralised countries in the developed world.  Regional leaders across the country lack the tools they need to build fair and sustainable economies for their people. The devolution revolution can hit the ground running. The English Devolution and Community Empowerment Act largely gives the power to get cracking across skills, housing, transport, the economy, and much more, setting devolution by default. It’s already brought £12.5bn of integrated budgets in scope. The determination softened on widening devolution and on mayors recently, with a compelling offer for all areas that should be fired back up. And councils as the foundations of devolution and often the delivery arm need resourcing beyond short term programmes. But for real change it needs a much deeper cultural change across Whitehall - and the scale of that challenge can’t be underestimated. A lot to do, yes, but a big prize!

Last year I committed Labour to scrapping a cruel and outdated law that criminalised people for sleeping rough. I’m proud that commitment is being delivered. The Vagrancy Act is repealed today, drawing a line under two centuries of injustice. mirror.co.uk/news/politics/…

I was humbled to visit the Heaton Park Synagogue today, the site of the horrendous terrorist attack on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish Calendar. We met those who were there during the attacks and spent time with the community and representatives from the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester. We must stand with the Jewish community by challenging antisemitic behaviour wherever we see it.
