One of the things that triggered my career path as a lawyer was a girl of my age called Joy. I just knew i wanted to defend people who didn't have people to do so. . Out of poverty, Joy used to hawk peppered meat on my streets to help out sort her parents' finances and to be able to go to school. . I used to see her every time I was going to school and when she came to fetch water or buy egg from my compound. I think on Jss class I was coming home for holiday when we met people dashing for different directions and my Dad was driving. . Turns out Joy was cajoled and ra *** by an older man who wanted to buy meat. He actually tore her genitals and she bled. She tried to cover it up, but her aunt, who noticed the way she was walking, forced the truth out of her mouth. . He was only remanded for a day and I saw him on the streets later. Joy actually died a few weeks later because of the infections and issues that came up later. . Now the horrible part, that man boasted a lot about the parents not being able to do anything but confessed to doing it. Joys parents who are illiterate left the vicinity out of shame. . The older man is still alive, and anytime i see him, i am reminded of a life he cut short. . Whenever I see a rape story or a narration of a rape incident is brought to my table, I am reminded of Joy. The young beautiful girl, who we cackled and exchanged school stories whenever we met. . The thing is that no human should exist in a conscious fear of being sexually harassed or abused. Rape is not something anyone should brush off, and in the instant case, it was a reoccurrence that led to death. Omo, this is so sad mehn. . I pray and hope Ochanya finds peace wherever she is🕊🕊🕊🕊.
