GraceAgenda 2025 | August 8-9 | Moscow, ID Seventy-five years ago, an Oxford professor published a children’s story. Critics and friends alike were uncertain about how a story of talking animals, Greek mythological creatures, and Father Christmas might be received. But as it turned out, the tales of Narnia came to be beloved by both children and adults around the world, and reckoned by the millions. And now, in our own time, when Western Civilization is trapped in the ice and snow of Enlightenment thinking, Lewis’ stories break in like a spring thaw. Changing the metaphor, though many of us have been turned into stone through sin and failure, God’s people are encouraged by these stories to remember that we serve the God who is able to make stony hearts come to life. We are glad to invite you and your whole family to climb aboard the Dawn Treader and join us at GraceAgenda, August 8-9, 2025 for a weekend of the sort of feasting and merriment that can make a witch’s left eye twitch. Good news! A proposal for a new Provisional Presbytery in Canada was ratified at Knox Presbytery of the CREC today. Lord willing, we will meet in the spring in Calgary for our first meeting. May God be praised and advance His church here in Canada.

I'm starting a series on institutional leadership on substack. Evangelical ministries have long struggled with a dearth of leaders who can lead effectively and I hope that this series can contribute to a needed remedy. I'll post miscellaneous bits of my writing in front of the paywall. But paid subscribers will get one article a month on the subject of practical leadership. Please consider subscribing. My first post is on the distinction between the safe decision and the right decision, which equates to the difference between looking for an alibi and looking for a win. benmerkle.substack.com/p/being-safe-v…

Think of how you might feel if you were suddenly notified that you had been made a guest of honor at Buckingham Palace. In order to make it in time you were to immediately hop on the private jet that was waiting for you. However, through some cruel twist, you would not be allowed to change your clothes, freshen up, or brush up on which fork to use for the salad and which one for the main course. You might arrive and find yourself absolutely overwhelmed with the sense that you had two left feet, your hands were all thumbs, your mouth was full of teeth, and your mind full of cobwebs. The doctrine of Christ’s ascension, unlike the sense of being “out of place”, is meant to lead us by faith to understand that we are made acceptable before God.

Evildoers feel guilt for their sins and crimes. But there is a funny quirk found in the sinful mind. It believes that if it can convince and entice others to go along with their error, the guilt will be diffused. This is why criminals run in gangs. This is also why criminals hang out in the halls of Congress.

I’ve declined to speak with media throughout the last year, but did offer a few thoughts to Blaze following the Pentagon service. You can find the article here if interested. theblaze.com/align/how-the-…

When Jesus rose from the dead, it proved that He had the keys, and he had broken all of His saints out of Hades. And if He can descend to the depths of Hades for them, there is no sin too dark that He can't do the same for you.
