The h2h also serves a purpose of limiting gains from playing too much. Something that was raised very early on when VRS was announced by many teams was that they were concerned by a ranking that allowed you to just keep playing events to gain more points.
The bucket size being 10 limits things to some degree but it doesn't punish playing endless matches to increase the values in the bucket. H2h as it is currently implement has a harsher penalty for that in the long term, maybe it's too harsh in some cases but Valve and we are very much still in the learning phase as new relationships between TOR/VRS are being highlighted e.g the open LAN rush.

You have to wager your ranking points in order to win more ranking points..
..is this a good design?
Reading Grahams post is perhaps an opportunity to ask, if that situation of teams trying to pull out, is not just the inevitable 'biproduct' of a ranking model where you can lose ranking from trying to get more.
In VRS you have to wager your points to gain more points..
Its always a risk/reward consideration which events to play in VRS.
Just not really considered by the tier 1 teams because their events award so many points its not a big factor that you lose points in defeats.
In tier 2 its a completely different ball game. Its a constant consideration of is this event worth the risk of participating?
As far as I know in many sports that have a ranking used mainly for qualification to events, it is not built in that you lose points from defeats.
You gain points from wins yes, but if a tennis player lose a first round match they wont lose ranking afaik.
I'm not sure its a good design in the VRS that you risk your points (h2h adjustment) when participating in events.
Currently it is good that we have the head to head adjustment, because it aligns the result of the basic VRS model with the actual results of the matches so to speak, and especially with the LAN win component being out of control, it is good that we have head to head adjustment to somewhat correct the offsets lan wins would create if not adjusted by head to head adjustment.
But still it would maybe be better with a model where you only potentially add to your ranking from playing events and dont subtract points from losing games.
But if theres no elo-part of a ranking model it requires some consensus on how to rank the events instead and here prize money is not enough.
So probably not possible without causing other issues and especially not in the current scene.
It would require Valve to take more active ownership of ranking the events properly.

Things like this raise the question of why NiP were allowed to signup for Birch Cup then dropout with less than a week to go when it was convenient for them to avoid potentially losing points. Bracket should have been drawn and either play or forfeit. Can't be having teams shotgunning signups across all these events just to drop out last minute constantly. If you make a commitment you should have to stick to it or we will just see teams signup for everything, TO's then go sell sponsors based on X Y Z teams attending only to then end up with A B C teams and potentially ruin relationships and future commercial value they need to survive. I'm sure things will ease up soon but we are getting a good blueprint of issues we need to be proactive in fixing rather than reactive.
