@ChristieMacFad @caitiecait21 @DavidKlion True. But most people’s closest friends tend to be around their own age. So the ability of one’s close friends to help provide security in old age might be reduced by their own needs and limitations at that phase of life.

I find the left natalism position baffling. Money is not the reason people don’t have more kids: consistently, across cultures and economic systems, people with more money have fewer kids. The world’s most generous welfare states have low birthrates. Most people want 2 kids *max*

@deonandan It’s fun to start a story together not knowing where it will take you both with unexpected turns introduced by the other ‘author’ it’s almost always hilarious unless it becomes competitive LOL

Last night at bedtime my 5-year old asked me for a "talking book." "What's that?" I asked. "It's when you tell a story, but you just talk. No book." Ah, he wanted me to make up a story, or tell one from memory. But from now on I will call myself, "The Talking Book."

Francis took action after a man in Peru tried to report serious sexual abuse allegations against the cardinal to Opus Dei Soon after, the victim started to receive threats — and was told that, if he went public, he'd be sued and his identity leaked elpais.com/sociedad/2025-…

One fact about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is always omitted in these accounts: its leadership consisted of a coalition between communists and Zionists. It saddens me. Have whatever crazy take you want about history but you can’t just hide the inconvenient facts
Jacobin@jacobin

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which began 82 years ago today, is now universally hailed as a bold act of Jewish resistance against the Nazis. But at the time, many Poles watched — or cheered — as the ghetto burned. The parallels with Gaza are hard to ignore. jacobin.com/2025/04/warsaw…

@Justin_Vogt @caitiecait21 @DavidKlion Let’s face it old age is terrifying and most people will die alone and probably in pain or some other dire circumstance. It’s not something you can plan for much. Same with tomorrow. Not sure why people think life has some predictable trajectory. Everyone’s gonna die though.

@caitiecait21 @DavidKlion "Secure" meaning they (or their direct caregivers) know there is someone who might be at least willing to assist in a crisis. On your second question: for millenia, that was one of the main reasons people had children—and, in many parts of the world, it still is.

Greenland is important in global racist mythology. The fantasy is that a superior race of white men can be bred and emerge from the Arctic... this is a big dog whistle to the fascist world. More on this in my @NYMag article on Don Junior. nymag.com/intelligencer/…

this is straight ghoul shit. also seems salient that the OpenAI Ghibli tool - which won’t let you memeify innocuous screenshots from Salo or Come and See, and refuses to produce content depicting “trauma” or “repressive regimes” - is totally fine with this

Two at-risk caribou herds could be lost forever under the #Alberta government's new draft plan for the Upper Smoky area. If approved a U.S. company can log their winter ranges, which could lead to their extinction. Read our joint release: shorturl.at/T2Iem #abpoli
