AI Pioneer Geoff Hinton tells me he believes AI is conscious.... and humans better get used to the idea that they're not the only intelligent life on earth. "They've very like us," he says. Interesting…because this hits (practically) at the question of how much is language needed in order to experience consciousness? Which I love. Ive said, as many do: LLMs are “just language, predicting next words, prediction machines” …then, recently, someone very smart responded to me: “But Christie, what do you think the human brain does? It learns patterns, then predicts words. It is the same thing. It is a prediction machine.” Which got to me. Language is most likely required for self-consciousness, but it is not required for consciousness…i think… Regardless, this post below inspires me to think about this stuff again. And also: Anthropic has to calm down.
