80 years ago today, Sir Winston Churchill delivered one of the most consequential speeches of the 20th century, his “Sinews of Peace” address, better known as the “Iron Curtain” speech, right here in my district in Fulton, Missouri. What would the world look like today without Winston Churchill? He was one of the greatest statesmen of any generation and among the first to recognize the enduring importance of truth, morality, and justice. That’s why my bill, which passed the House this week, to designate the @ChurchillMuseum at Westminster College as a National Historic Landmark is so important. This designation will help ensure that future generations of students have the opportunity to read, learn, and reflect, not only on history itself, but on the powerful legacy of Winston Churchill.

Unanimous in Senate, unanimous in House @NatResources Committee. Let’s make it happen before March 5 in the full House. Thank you @RepBobOnder for your leading the way.

I’m proud to share that my bill to formally designate America’s National Churchill Museum as a historic landmark PASSED out of the @NatResources Committee— a critical step toward preserving Churchill’s legacy for future generations.  Thank you to @SenHawleyPress and @RepWesterman for your strong support of this legislation and for recognizing the importance of honoring Churchill’s enduring contributions.

Did you know that on this day, in 1946, Winston Churchill wrote to say he had not yet chosen a title for his forthcoming address? He noted that it would “probably be World Peace.” Join us March 5–7 for the 80th anniversary of the words that helped shape the modern world.

#OTD in 1946 Westminster College President Franc McCluer wrote to Winston Churchill, who had recently arrived in Miami Beach. McCluer conveyed the enthusiastic response to the announcement of Churchill’s March 5 visit, when he would deliver the “Iron Curtain” speech.

Sixty-one years ago today, on 24 January 1965, Winston Churchill died at the age of 90. He passed away peacefully at his London residence. Upon hearing the news, President Harry Truman said, “The world has lost a great statesman, and I have lost a friend.” 📷 Baxter Brown Watson

80 years ago, President Truman wrote to @WestminsterMO informing him that Winston Churchill accepted an invitation to speak on March 5. For the small college, the news was met with excitement. For Churchill, it was an opportunity to warn the world of an “iron curtain.”
