@Cineres1 Yup! They only do TLM at S. Nicolau for the Rorate Mass and very few other occasions (I can think of a first solemn Mass for a FSSP priest), the regular ones were moved to Conceição Velha (which is basically next door) after TC.

@Cineres1 It was the Rorate Mass at S. Nicolau in Lisbon. It was my only time in a TLM ever. I was going for the 10pm Mass one Friday and saw it was happening a couple of hours later and said "why not?"

@_naosejasparva I don’t live in Portugal and I’m not familiar with Portuguese news media other than limited exposure to tv news when I visit, but is there a news media (print, online or tv network) that is generally balanced and not heavily skewed to the left?

Portuguese media podcast episode being 100% puzzled that the Pope is Catholic (re: anti-syncretism statements in Angola) They really love him when he's useful and then start mocking the Faith and his authority when it gets serious

Converts who come into Catholicism and object when you criticize the Pope just have no idea about the amount of irreverence American Catholics have. They know Irish drunks, Italian gangsters - they know all about coverups of gay molesting priests. This is an institution with all the corruption you find in institutions. Newcomers arrive with some polished notion in their heads. It’s just not that - it’s an outfit that has lasted a long time, has a lot going for it - but has dealt with nonstop corruption and filth - Pope Benedict XVI himself used the word ‘filth’ to describe things that have go on with abuse and in seminaries. So criticism has always been there, should always be there - and if it had been more respected, there might not even have been a German monk tacking theses on a wall in 1517.

Today, Mrs. Sarah Mullally - who thinks she is the Archbishop of Canterbury - pretended to give a blessing in the Clementine Chapel, in the crypt of the Vatican Basilica. It is the chapel closest to the tomb of Saint Peter. As if that were not bad enough, there is a Catholic Bishop there pretending to receive the “blessing”. Saint Thomas More, pray for us.

Rural Catholicism is in trouble because rural places are in trouble. They are all shrinking with fewer and fewer young families and kids because there are no jobs paying a liveable wage. This isn’t a problem the Church can solve, to be honest.
𝙷𝚒𝚌𝚔𝚖𝚊𝚗@shagbark_hick

In many, many places, rural Catholicism is simply going to die. There will be more and more places where there is no feasible way to fulfill one's Sunday obligation, no Priests, no Parish life of any kind. Devout people will travel far distances for Holy Week; lukewarm Catholics will give up the Faith entirely. I can draw no other conclusion from what I am seeing here. Just yesterday our Priest announced that over 50% of our Diocesan Parishes are operating at a financial loss. Vocations are still nowhere near sufficient to keep all of our Parishes open. Though conversions are lately booming at historical levels, and many fallen away Catholics are returning to the Church by the tens of thousands -- there will be a "lag" between this newfound vitality and the reality on the ground. Rural areas will be ground zero for the changes ahead. I have no idea how to plan for this. Are we to congregate in cities? Should we move to be near the Cathedral? What if the Diocese merges or closes? Are we to accept a descent into living in "mission territory," where we might see a Priest and go to Mass monthly at best? Are we to prepare ourselves to drive further and further distances to receive the Sacraments? There are no easy answers here. But I think it's time for our Bishops to be realistic about what the situation really is, and to help the faithful prepare for it.

Meditation for Lent: The story is told of the monk in the Egyptian desert who was at prayer, and a scorpion came and wrapped itself around his ankles, but he did not lower his hands till he had finished all his usual prayers, and because he loved God more than himself, he was not harmed.

I'll be meditating and doing an examination of conscience on my prayer life based on this father of the desert story found in the Philokalia. To provide a context, desert fathers or monks would pray standing (posture of attention) and with hands raised high ( see psalm 140 , septuagint). So the beautiful story is told of a holy monk who was at prayer, and a scorpion came and wrapped itself around his ankles, but the monk did not lower his hands till he had finished all his usual prayers, and because he loved God more than himself, he was not harmed. Have a holy and fruitful Lent.

I’m fresh out of ideas. What are y’all giving up/or doing special for Lent? Last year I gave up Protestantism 😜. So it’s going to be hard to top that one.

@TheStaad Don’t you get all confused between Spanish and Italian? I’m a native Portuguese speaker and I always confuse the two.

I’m studying four languages: French (which I’ve spoken for decades but need refreshing), Spanish, Italian and Latin Of these four, my least favorite is Spanish, but it is by far the most useful where I live. My favorite is Italian. So, to keep my motivation up, I always make myself do my daily Spanish lesson before I allow myself my daily Italian lesson Spanish is dinner, but Italian is dessert And Latin ties them all together I know I sound like a nerd, but this is so much fun
