@saaranghaeyo @LardofSith @niederhaus17566 @potatoslav That's if you can even get the attention of the wait staff. I've been in European restaurants many times where a waiter is nowhere in sight for long stretches of time to the point where my partner or I end up getting up to track them down to order or get the bill.

@LardofSith @niederhaus17566 @potatoslav In Europe you're expected to tell the waiter if you want something, not to expect them to come running to you all the time to check on you. It's not hard to raise your hand and say "can I have another drink please?"

i actually think this comment really highlights that this IS a cultural disconnect. in the US people are more entrepreneurial and more willing to take risks. for better or for worse, the mindset is that if you work harder and work better, you will be more successful, and the system is set up to let the risk takers make big money. European countries have stronger social safety nets, and working harder often doesn’t benefit you anything, and if you try to be entrepreneurial you get punished with layers of bureaucracy and excessive taxes. there are bartenders pulling in thousands in tips a night. a lot of people genuinely like the system as it is.
FB@wassloss

@potatoslav Tipping is not a wage. This is transferring the entrepreneurial risk onto the employee. It is a sign of a deeply flawed and unjust system. Yes, as tourists we should pay the tipp, because it is not the waiters fault. But when confronted with this bullshit expect being called out.

@potatoslav Also, if we assume they're catering to World Cup watchers, it means tables aren't going to turn over for a few hours. No server is gonna want tables that occupy tables for a long time and then leave a European-level tip.

it’s very funny to see all the people screaming “just pay a living wage!” in the comments bc… that’s what this is for? Americans already tip around this much. you were the ones that were going to go to a foreign country and not follow the cultural norm. tipping culture is not going to be “solved” by tourists refusing to tip, you’re just being an asshole.
World Cup HQ@WorldCup26HQ

Some restaurants have planned an automatic 20% tip for U.S. visitors. 💰🇺🇸

@AndrewZ60494543 @2024dion @LinkofSunshine This might actually create some weird incentives – like suburban voters in a particular county encouraging their reps to redraw the primary city’s boundaries so it doesn’t cross 200k and suddenly “take over” the county.

@2024dion @LinkofSunshine My contention is that anytime a city gets above 200,000 residents it should just consolidate with the county, which would get a name like Miami-Dade, and the county borders would be the new municipal borders like the boroughs of NYC.

@devils1726 @Birdyword Even in other countries with much denser central cities, suburban living makes up a substantial portion of the population. Certainly the case across the Anglosphere, but true in many parts of Europe too.

@Birdyword Most countries, do to either size or economic factors, are just more heavily urbanized. In my travels, outside of Canada, I can’t think of other country I’ve been in that has a sizeable portion of their population in what can be called suburbs.

@CartoonsHateHer There is a segment of the left (usually more leftist aligned, but it spans camps) that more or less embraces nihilism and “lol, nothing matters, wouldn’t it be cool if we all died?” And it’s all so fake!

I have heard multiple older liberals say this to me, and ultimately it's a complete performance. They would be devastated if they actually found out they had 2 years to live. People in deeply impoverished countries, or countries in war, notably still want to live!
Leah Libresco Sargeant@LeahLibresco

Unusually explicit connection from the rejection of children to the death drive at the end of this reader roundup in the NYT. Begins with the usual “Who would want to bring children into a world…” and ends, well…

@yhdistyminen The funny thing is that I grew up around a lot of suburban and rural (of the middle/upper middle class variety) conservatives, and many showed enormous contempt for poor, rural whites. These same folks pretend to care now because it’s politically convenient.

I am detecting some tension between "liberals are terrible at modeling the minds of their political opponents" and "liberals just straight up hate rural whites".

@yhdistyminen @xwanyex I know this isn’t news to you, but wanye doesn’t argue in good faith. Every tweet is his weird political fantasy that serves as rage bait for libs and political masturbation for right wingers.

@xwanyex Do you ever get tired of the "median lib is an insane harpy who wants to genocide the whites, whereas median con is an erudite suburban dad who has deeply nuanced reasons for wanting less immigration" schtick? Frankly it seems beneath you.

@rhett_carlson Fewer rings of suburbs and the east metro also just feels emptier/less developed.

@CityOfTakes Growing up in south metro, I didn’t feel the east/west tribalism and subsequent dev patterns. But yeah, like 2 rings of burbs in the east vs 4+ in the west.

@xwanyex Every lib I know can model the pro-life argument. It’s genuinely not hard at all – a lot of people hold nuanced views. But we know this is all fake rage bait because you also haven’t had hundreds of debates with progressives about abortion. This stuff is just made up on the spot.

@rhett_carlson Seems natural that Minneapolis would expand west toward the lake (but maybe that’s hindsight being 20/20). What’s more weird to me is how lopsided the west vs. east metro is.

Also the assertion that MSP doesn't grow north because of geography is funny. Maybe if you don't like sandy soil? Just look at any core city's wealthy sections and draw a line outward

@2024dion Yeah, the Midtown Greenway in Minneapolis needs to be doubled in width. Trails around the Chain of Lakes could use the same treatment.

@StatisticUrban @lst156 Fascinated by the idea the author wants us to hate “transients from elsewhere” when they are themselves “from elsewhere” putting pressure on the housing market!

@lst156 Fascinated by the idea that Cleveland, Ohio is a place where "homeownership is unreachable for all but the rich." The median house there sells for $135k!

@xwanyex Sure, that's totally fine. Rural residents also exist in places at the pleasure of the state. I suspect you're less sympathetic to them getting what urban residents decide to give them, though.

@leiftree It's just so frustrating that we put in traffic calming measures and people just ignore them. It's very normal to see cars drive over the 25th and 27th medians on Lyndale. Ditto for cars going over the traffic diverters in the Lyndale neighborhood.

Today a guy speeding down 10th Ave. got himself killed after hitting a bus on 38th after blowing a stop sign. The hit bus then collided with a house. I beg the city of Minneapolis to introduce more traffic calming. People speed dangerously in Southside everyday.
