After 11 years, you would think people would understand how Trump operates. Yes, it was blunt and to our American ears, over the top. It's Trump's crude way of speaking. But it was also fluent Farsi. It's the one language the Iranian leaders understand. It's the language of the Middle East. Trump wasn't speaking to us, he was speaking to Iran. Twenty-four hours before he said it, the Iranians opposed a cease fire. After he said it, they were for a ceasefire. Btw, for 47 years we heard them chant "Death to America." Where were you then?
Michael McFaul@McFaul

While everyone has moved on, I remain deeply troubled by Trumps threat to wipe out an entire civilization. No American president has talked in such terms. No American president ever should.

GOP Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) criticized Vice President JD Vance’s visit to Hungary to boost Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in his reelection bid. “We should not have a senior leader campaigning for a candidate in a NATO country,” Bacon said. “We let those countries and their voters decide.”

The Trump administration does not speak for all of us Americans, on Ukraine not least.
George W. Bush Presidential Center@TheBushCenter

Today, President George W. Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush welcomed Ukrainian First Lady Mrs. Olena @ZelenskaUA to the Bush Center. “We admire your country’s bravery and ingenuity,” said President George W. Bush. “We want the people of Ukraine to know that we continue to stand with America’s ally, Ukraine. You are fighting for freedom, and I believe you will prevail.”  Ukraine’s defense against an unprovoked full-scale invasion from Vladimir Putin has now entered its fifth year. Vladimir Putin is responsible for the gravest security crisis on the European continent since World War II. The Bush Institute continues to believe that now is the time to stop him – and to do so, the U.S. must continue its support of Ukraine.

@Inevitablewest Is it? Not certain that the majority of Iranians look at the militant Kurdish groups as liberators or even having their best interest at heart.

🚨BREAKING: Donald Trump has done the impossible: He has boots on the ground in Iran, and they are non-Western! Iraqi Kurds have stepped up and pledged allegiance to the United States. This is undeniably GENIUS.

@DineshDSouza You do realize that Germany formally declared war on the US and the US did as well on Germany in return ?

How about the US attack on Nazi Germany? How would you classify that? Germany was not directly responsible for Pearl Harbor. Yet the US joined the war not only against imperial Japan but also against fascist Italy and Nazi Germany.
Caroline Sunshine@CSUNSHINE

There’s no such thing as a ‘pre-emptive strike.’ If Iran struck us first, we would’ve called it an attack not a pre-emptive strike. We don’t call 9/11 and Pearl Harbor “pre-emptive strikes”, we call them what they are: acts of war.

@EconomyComments @stuey_beef @grok Asked & answered your own question. Iran is enriching uranium for nuclear weapons. Iraq, the claim was that it had nuclear weapons. Afghanistan initiated 911. No claim Iran has the bomb, but they are developing it. UK is irrelevant in this anyway.

Serious question: If Britain won’t stand alongside allies against the Iranian regime — a state that funds terror and threatens nuclear escalation — What exactly would we stand up for anymore? Interested to hear views.

@EconomyComments @stuey_beef The fact that you think this is similar to Iraq or Afghanistan destroyed any credibility to your argument. The Iranians acknowledge enriching uranium and are working on long range ballistic missile development. Your premise is flawed at best. Substance? Hardly.

Who is celebrating? The people of Iran. The Gulf kingdoms. Saudi Arabia. Israel. India. Iranians across the world. Who’s not? Well, the better question to ask is: WHY NOT?

@CktlsNE1 @stuey_beef Yes they are near identical situations. I have no desire to protect Iran, it seems a terrible regime, but we are not the world police, we had our time. You do what you feel is best, and to an extent I support it, that doesn’t mean we have to join in.

@EconomyComments @stuey_beef Do you think Iraq and Iran are similar? I don’t recall Saddam ever admitting to enriching uranium. If you think protecting the Ayatollahs puts you on the right side of history, by all means do so. We will recognize that and act accordingly.
