Heartbreaking Update: A fundraiser has been created for the daughter who lost her parents and three brothers in the devastating flash flooding near a Wayne County campground. The fundraiser identifies the victims as a Provo, Utah family including Spencer Long, his wife Katrina, and their sons Reid, Thayne and Gage. Organizers say the family's daughter, Lydia, survived but is now facing the unimaginable loss of her entire immediate family. The money raised will help cover funeral and memorial expenses, housing, counseling, daily living costs and other needs as Lydia begins to rebuild her life. The tragedy unfolded Friday near Sunglow Campground, outside Bicknell, after heavy rain triggered flash flooding. Three family members were found Friday evening, and two others were located following an extensive search Saturday. Planning vacations is how I relax. I’m planning on a big family trip out West in the late spring to visit the LDS Temple open house in SLC. I’d love to plan a week or two in Utah and the area. Where do you recommend seeing, staying and doing? For six kids between 4 and 13.

🙏🏻 Update on our nephew Michael 🙏🏻 Friends, we just received the devastating news we’ve been dreading. The latest testing confirmed that baby Michael has a serious genetic disease that has prevented his lungs from developing fully. There is nothing medically that can be done. Katie and I are flying out tomorrow, and all 10 siblings will be together with baby Michael to say goodbye as they keep him comfortable for whatever time remains. This is an absolute nightmare. We are asking for an absolute miracle — for God to intervene in a way only He can. But right now the situation is dire, and we are preparing for the worst while still clinging to hope and prayer. To everyone who has prayed, donated to the GoFundMe, shared the posts, sent messages, and lifted this little boy and his parents up — thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your love and support have meant more than you know during this impossible time. Aaron is holding up as well as anyone could in this situation. He’s staying strong for his wife Kiki and their son, but the weight is crushing. In the midst of this heartbreak, I keep coming back to a perspective that brings some peace: God gave Michael to them for these several days. He gave Aaron and Kiki the profound gift of loving this baby so deeply — of knowing, in the clearest way possible, the depth of parental love when it matters most. How many times have Katie and I faced loss where we didn’t even get that chance? This baby got to be held. He got to be baptized. Yet another paper finds that decriminalizing drug possession in Washington and Oregon caused an increase in overdose deaths. "Synthetic-control estimates show that both decriminalization regimes sharply reduced drug arrests and were followed by sustained increases in overdose mortality relative to matched counterfactuals. The estimates imply approximately 1,186 excess deaths in Oregon and 1,895 in Washington from 2021 through 2023. We also revisit the role of fentanyl supply shocks. This is one of the most negative and least commented-upon phenomena in America today; it’s a symptom of how bureaucracy, over-regulation and large corporate power — which all go together — are replacing small businesses and organic communal life.

On my mind: how to pilot an insurance-based intervention to increase employment for people with criminal records. Much more promising than policies like Ban the Box and Clean Slate! Excited to measure the impact.

As America celebrates its 250th birthday, I’m reminded that what makes our country exceptional isn’t that we all think the same — it’s that we choose to build something together. Like a neighborhood potluck, America is strongest when people gather around a shared table and remember that what unites us is greater than what divides us.
