In Bonn this week for the fifth #EUCleanAirForum - where naturally, a major focus is the implementation of the Ambient Air Quality Directive (AAQD) across Europe 🗺️ 🗣️ I enjoyed contributing to the discussions on a panel with Piotr Szymański, Director Energy, Transport and Climate (@EU_Commission), @SvVeldhoven (@WorldResources) and Nadezhda Bobcheva (Dep. Mayor of Sofia) looking at some very concrete actions governments - at the city, regional and national level - can implement. My key takeaways 👇 • Europe is uniquely positioned to address poor #AirQuality, with a wealth of experts and strong civil society capacity. @CleanAirFund is fortunate to work alongside many of these incredible organisations. • The revised #AAQD is a transformational opportunity and we're excited to support more action on implementing the legislation in 2026. • Poland shows how quick progress is possible. #AirPollution levels have come down rapidly through a combination of domestic coal burning bans, heating subsidy schemes, low emissions zones and cross-party collaboration. These improvements demonstrate what other regions might achieve. • The success of AAQD depends on robust data, inclusive policies and clear communication of the benefits, from asthma reduction to new green jobs. • Europe is at the forefront of growing momentum on clean air, and sharing its best practice will help to accelerate progress globally. 🔑 Heating & cooling in focus - volatile energy prices, costly fossil fuel imports, and grid congestion demand bold action. 💡 Heating and cooling—50% of Europe’s energy use—still relies 75% on fossil fuels. To #HeatRight, we need: 🔥 More ambitious decarbonisation targets for heating and cooling, making it a priority 🔥 Streamline private and public finance for clean heat and cool projects 🔥 Clear objectives for EU funds to unlock investment Finland has set a timeline for phasing out fossil fuels and their subsidies while providing information and accessible funding. Germany has set out an ambitious trajectory for new district heating connections, and, in 2021, 22% of all new buildings were connected to district heating. In Italy, 85% of all solar installers also install a heat pump which can store hot water for peak heat demand! It’s time for a secure, sustainable, and affordable energy future. 🌍

As we look forward to the 2024 - 2029 @EU_Commission mandate, one critical development is for the Energy Commissioner to deliver the first-ever European Affordable Housing Plan. 🏘️ Beyond housing availability, too many Europeans live in inadequate, energy-poor homes. 🙅‍♀️🏚️ That's why the plan needs to include renovation, transition to #CleanHeating, and provisions for low-income households and affordability. #HeatRight

The @EU_Commission's @EU_ScienceHub published a new report on EU air pollution trends in heating and cooling! 🔥🧊 All #CleanHeat solutions are needed for cleaner air. For #DistrictHeating and cooling, the study outlines how they can reduce air pollution by using clean energy sources & benefitting from centralised emission controls.
