Nothing kills motivation like uncertainty. You see this principle in Ernest Shackleton. Stranded in the middle of Antarctica with his men facing starvation, frostbite, and no realistic rescue, he still projected absolute confidence. Shackleton gave his men a clear plan even when he did not fully know how he would pull it off. That certainty was the only thing keeping their morale alive, and by extension, their lives. Curt Richter’s “drowning mouse experiment” showed the same pattern. Rats left alone swam for only a few minutes before giving up. But rats that were briefly rescued before drowning, then placed back in the water, swam for up to sixty hours, more than a thousand times longer. A simple, imperfect plan is far preferable to waiting for a perfect plan. It gives a sense of certainty, and with certainty comes hope. And hope is sometimes all we have to sustain us in our most difficult moments.
