ICYMI: In @Australian, our Executive Director @Dyrenfurth warns that deepening intergenerational anger is becoming one of the defining forces reshaping democratic politics across the world.
Recent JCRC focus groups conducted with RedBridge revealed a growing belief among younger and working Australians that opportunity is no longer earned — but inherited. As one participant put it:
“Luck plays a huge part. Where you were born, how you were born, where you were brought up, what your parents had.”
Another summed up the alienation many now feel toward politics itself:
“No one speaks for us. It’s all politics for someone else’s benefit.”
Nick argues this helps explain why many One Nation voters are less ideological loyalists than tactical insurgents trying to force the political system to listen.
Many still support recognisably social democratic outcomes — affordable housing, secure work and strong public services — but increasingly believe mainstream politics no longer represents their material interests in language that speaks to them.
“The lesson is not simply that voters are angry,” Nick writes. “It is that millions believe the political system no longer sees them, hears them or offers them a future.”
And that increasingly voters are asking something more primal: “Whose side are you on?”
