Nothing beats watching players compete in games. Showcases are for show. Games reveal who can actually play. One game isn’t enough, but I’d rather evaluate multiple games than one workout. There are game players, and there are showcase players & sometimes both.

Want to know if you are a D1 baseball prospect? You better be able to play great defense. Yes I said great defense. An average D1 shortstops fielding percentage is 97%. Every other position is slightly higher. Let that sink in. Look at your high school and travel ball fielding percentage and it will advertise where you belong in college the majority of the time. and You have to be able to get on base or drive in runs offensively.

There are a lot of showcase hitters with great exit velo and BP swings. But year after year, they don’t produce in games. Why recruit metrics over production? Take the game hitter every time! Thank me later.

Puberty is the number one key to player development. The changes that happen to, and within, young athletes bodies can literally change athletic abilities seemingly overnight. From one season to the next, inches in height and 10’s of pounds change, all of the sudden these kids are Dudes!! Unfortunately, we can’t force it to happen, but remember, from a training perspective, everything we do pre-puberty is to help them be as ready as possible to take full advantage of it when it does decide to show up.

The first thing a college coach evaluates isn't your stats. It isn't your exit velocity. It isn't your batting average. It's how you look. Your body type. How you move. How athletic you appear. Before you ever step into the batter's box, coaches are already building an initial impression. You only get one first impression.

Hot take: nobody “develops” players. Players develop players. Coaches and programs give them the tools and the knowledge (like a facility, weightroom, coaching, practices, games) but nobody can develop a player. The player has to develop the player.

I don’t care what level of college you play (or played). You’re one of the 7% of HS athletes to do it, and that’s something to be really proud of.

If you are too weak to swing the age appropriate bat… choke up.. The same player they are making the new bat rule for will have to play defense against the strong kid using the same bat as the weak kid.

Exit velo, velocity, and spin rate are great. But none of them guarantee you can actually play the game. Plenty of cage hitters and bullpen arms struggle when the lights come on. Coaches, don’t let the metrics outweigh game performance.
