It is good to see the @EU_ISS' reflections and recommendations on the tricky subject of climate interventions – especially regarding research on solar radiation modification and the governance of potential applications. The International Center for Future Generations - ICFG team agrees with the recommendations that the EU should engage in 1. guiding research to ensure it is done responsibly, 2. funding public research to address knowledge gaps, and 3. helping develop international governance that deters conflictual use. In addition, we have identified several no-regret governance opportunities to further this issue without predetermining future choices for use or non-use. These include transparency, monitoring, cooperation to delineate (un-) desirable activities, and (collaborative) foresight to better anticipate how things could go wrong or right in the broader climate risk landscape. These are outlined in our program fact sheet: lnkd.in/eYBZdvc5 Finally, I'd like to note that the EU has already commissioned work to enhance guidance on solar radiation modification research - through the project @CoCREATE_EU

. @PascalLAMYPPF makes an important point in the @FT: future generations hold some serious stakes with climate change at double the Paris Agreement targets. He suggests solar radiation modification might become a worthy addition to the climate-threat managing toolbox and points to near term steps: -> Global governance to avoid premature or ill-considered use -> Moratorium on SRM deployment and large-scale experiments (with clarity of expiration – including sufficient scientific understanding and governance) -> Expanded research on SRM – transparently and with global inclusion I'm working on these issues – with the International Center for Future Generations on strengthening governance and transparency and with the @CoCREATE_EU project on the conditions for responsible research. ft.com/content/cd88bf…
