THE FIRST TIME I STARTED THE 40 AT THE COMBINE! I was roped or force to be “The Starter” at the Combine in Indy by legendary scout C.O Brocato! It was the first time it was going to be televised on the NFL network! I was scared shitless especially when the guy said, “Here’s your microphone.” Whew pressure of TV, my NFL peers and now mic up! That was nothing compared to the front row of the Combine where a lineup that rivaled the Big Red Machine, the Great Yankee teams or the 1970’s Steel Curtain! There in front row of the 40 sat the lineup of Bill Parcells, Al Davis, Jerry Jones and Gil Brandt with Mike Mularkey who was Head Coach of the Bills one row back on the right laughing at me! 4 Hall of Famers! After each 40 group they would critique me! Coach Parcells saying, “You did good kid, you didn’t screw up that many, Al Davis grinning at me giving me a history lesson of football, Jerry Jones just laughing and grinning at their comments and Gil Brandt giving me encouragement but grinning too! Then they found out I was from Pittsburgh and Coach Parcells and Al Davis would quiz me on old time NFL players from Pittsburgh area to see if I knew by stuff! They both recruited the area for Air Force and Army as college coaches back in the day! Al Davis gave me a dissertation on why you should never put ketchup on a Chicago Hotdog because of “Acidity, Acidity, Acidity” he said. I said, “I’m from Pittsburgh, I put ketchup on everything! Now 23 years later, I missed those interactions (getting my balls busted) with those Hall of Famers and Characters! Being the Starter at the Combine ain’t easy but I’ve had some amazing experiences!
