Analysis of youth development systems across Europe revealed – unsurprisingly - that most top talent (players valued over £12m) progressed through the nation’s main academies at some point.
However, the final column in the table highlights that most of these players did not start in these academies from the youngest age groups. In fact, the trend is for a wide base of talent to be nurtured in local or partner clubs before they begin to move into a ‘best with best’ environment at the 12-16 stage.
These findings suggest that, in the UK, academies either recruit too early or ‘grassroots’ doesn’t have the infrastructure and expertise to develop talent like these European nations? 🤔

In thinking about assessing coaching, coach learning and any intervention - if both the independent and dependent variables are based on self-reports by the same person we have learned absolutely nothing about coaching.

They’re part of a team/ structure. Ever wondered why Brighton managers do so well? And at other clubs why the managers consistently fail?

Russell Martin needed police to escort him from the stadium as fans surrounded his car. Graham Potter gets mocked online with edited photos. Ange Postecoglou hears his own fans chanting “sacked in the morning” after just a few games. Arteta is continuously criticized for not winning titles despite his great work at Arsenal. Journalists ask coaches in press conferences if their job is in danger after just two defeats. On social media, many people seem to know better than those who actually coach. Even players now show their frustration towards the coach when they’re subbed off — something that used to be unthinkable years ago. The respect for coaches, for leadership, for the work behind every decision… is fading fast. We can debate tactics, selections, and style — that’s part of football. But what we’re seeing lately goes beyond criticism. It’s personal, constant, and often cruel. Coaches deserve more respect.
