Ben McCollum shares what it feels like to be around first-place people and a first-place culture. "I went to Northwest Missouri State, and my first practice with Steve Tapmeyer - best coach I've ever been around - I sat there and I'm like, 'This is what first place feels like. This is what a first-place culture feels like. This is what first-place people feel like.'" That was the wake-up call. He realized what first-place people have: "They've got an extreme work ethic. They've got an edge to 'em that other people don't - a competitive spirit." Then he quoted John Thompson: "You can tame a fool a lot quicker than you can resurrect a corpse...We want guys with a little edge to 'em." You can coach skills, but you can't coach competitive spirit. You don't want to consistently coach their effort and attitude. The last thing they look for: Energy givers. "Over the years, we found that guys that are moody don't make it in our program." "If you're moody, if you have low energy, if you suck the life out of the building - you don't make it." Talent isn't enough. Your energy matters. Your attitude matters. Successful people have a competitive edge, they bring energy, and they look to consistently get better. “I don’t want 5 star players that become 3 star human beings. I want 3, 4 ,5 star guys that want to become 10 star human beings. Don't tell me who you were when you were 18. Show me who you are when you are 36 ... and have to take on a life of responsibilities."

Coach Cal’s right — administration matters. But at the high school level, it takes more than that. You need administration that believes in you, coaches/players that are all in, parents that get involved in program, and a community that doesn’t just cheer on Friday nights… but financially supports the program too. Great high school programs aren’t built by one person. They’re built when everybody is invested — with their time, their trust, and their resources. If everybody isn’t rowing the boat in the same direction, don’t complain when the whole thing ends up spinning in circles.

Not a lot of dribbling in the NCAA tournament. A ton of CATCH AND SHOOT jumpers though — maybe go work on that more than anything. Not sure how any player that is serious about improving & wanting to play at a high level doesn’t want to go shoot right now

Ben McCollum on not buying into external narratives (such as, “the world’s falling when you’re losing” and “the world can’t be any better when you win a game”):  “For me, I don’t pay attention. I just try not to pay attention. If my bosses tell me something, then I pay attention. If my wife tells me something, I pay attention. If my mom tells me something, I pay attention. If an outside Twitter source says something, I don’t really pay attention because it’s not something that is going to benefit me. It’s not going to help us improve. And so, you just have to stay grounded in that."
