@SkinsHoops86 I think Kelly is cut from a different clothe. Not to say others couldn’t do it, I just think you have to look at him under a different light. He owns a State Farm branch(20 years +) and has built the premier grass roots program on the West Coast.

@CoachErickson35 Just to string this out & play devils advocate, AAU to D1 HC is rare ... but in every big metro area, can find long time, very successful AAU coach w/ deep local ties
Are you saying this is undertapped market & MORE D1s should be hiring straight from AAU?

Per multiple sources, the University of Nevada will be hiring Kelly Sopak as its next Head Women’s Basketball Coach. Sopak is a longtime HS coach in California and is also the director of the Cal Stars EYBL program.

@SkinsHoops86 Reno is only 3 hours from the Bay Area. He will be able to get California talent, just like he did with Cal Stars. He’s also a legend on the West Coast. He knows every one and is really well respected. I think he’s gonna do just fine.

My initial hunch is this is not a good hire.
He's not going to out talent teams like he could in eybl. His main strength is probably Xs and Os but AAU xs and Os is much different than D1 Xs and Os. Prob not gonna have advantage there.

@thecb675 @CoachAMFobb06 @ChrisYBaldwin College coaches sign multi year contracts. Players don’t(for the most part). Yes coaches can get out via Buy Outs. But Kentucky isn’t going to pay Mark Popes $16M to buyout his contract so they can pay Hurley $10M over 5 years and pay his $6M buyout to UConn.

@CoachAMFobb06 @ChrisYBaldwin This is honest dialogue since I’m not a coach. Sure it doesn’t apply to every coach but the top 1% could get any job if they wanted. The 1% made more than college athletes for a long time & get bigger check at next stop. Coaches from mid majors than make jump get paid right?

@jaydixon @ChrisYBaldwin I don’t think you need to explain the value of education from sports and more specific collegiate athletics to Kelvin Sampson. He’s talking specifically about how broken the NCAA Div 1 system. It’s become a pro league with no real rules or oversight.

@ChrisYBaldwin I disagree. I see his point regarding the NIL, it’s bad and not how the game should be, but playing sports is one of the most valuable educations in the world.
In fact, I have the data and evidence to support it.

It does have to be a legitimate shot attempt at other levels but not as refs say, “a shot is a shot, doesn’t have to hit anything”
