The best investment you can make in your program costs nothing. Show up early. Stay late. Know your players’ names, their stories, and what they’re carrying off the field. Presence is a currency most coaches are too busy to spend.

I’ve never met a great player who didn’t have someone who believed in them before they believed in themselves. Be that person for someone. It costs you nothing and could change the entire trajectory of their life.

Hard coaching without relationship produces resentment. Relationship without hard coaching produces entitlement. The sweet spot is a player who knows you love them and knows you will not lower the bar for them.

Another freaky athlete I’m hearing that should wow folks at the Combine is Stephen F Austin CB Charles Demmings. He’s an FCS player to keep an eye on.

As a coach, if all you do is develop the player and ignore the person, then you’ve missed the assignment. The game has an expiration date for everyone. The jersey comes off. The crowd goes home. The stats stop mattering. The accolades start to fade. The essence of who they were outside of the talent remains though. Who they were when adversity hit, who they were when nobody was watching, who they were in the community, classroom, and at home…that’s what lasts. Coaching is stewardship. It’s responsibility.
