We were there to recruit another prospect. Coach pulled a kid out of class: “I got another one I really like.” Had height, just needed more time in the weight room. Played hard on film. Looked like a project. We signed him late. He grew into 300… Wound up playing in the NFL. One offer. You never know. Evaluation and projection matter.

A big misunderstanding in recruiting: Families think exposure gets players recruited. Coaches recruit traits. On highlight film we’re evaluating: Speed / quickness Size Balance & movement Change of direction Power & strength Traits project. Stats don’t.

The weight room is biased. It only rewards those who work. And it will see right through anyone not willing to do it. It’s a truth teller. You can’t fool it. It will let you know exactly where things stand.

Hard coaching without relationship produces resentment. Relationship without hard coaching produces entitlement. The sweet spot is a player who knows you love them and knows you will not lower the bar for them.

Football becomes 100x easier when you gain speed - defenders can’t keep up with you - your coaches force feed you the ball - everyone else moves in slow mo - your hits become more violent Get faster = fun things happen

Most high schools shouldn't be copying college offenses. They recruit to fit personnel to heir system. You're stuck with what walks through the halls. Build something that fits whoever is in the locker room every August.

I get asked this a lot: “What level can he play at?” That’s different from: “What level will recruit him first?” I’ve coached JUCO and D2 national championship teams loaded with Division I players. Now, with the portal, the first opportunity isn’t the ceiling. Development and fit decide a career’s path.

I really dont think 95% of society realizes how hard it is to play any sport at any level in college.

As an athlete, you play your best when you stop trying to control the outcome, and instead, you relax and let your instincts take over.

Underrated coaching truth: The best coaches aren’t obsessed with talent. They’re obsessed with effort. With attitude. With toughness. That’s what wins when it gets hard.

One of the biggest lies in the coaching profession: how many guys you “helped” go D1. I have seen some crazy lists from people this off season. Apparently if you watch a kid workout you coached him to go D1. All clout chasing. Let’s come back to the core. It’s all about the kids. All that matters for us as coaches is if we are giving them our best and helping them develop.

Assistant coaches are the backbone of every great team. They build trust with players. They grind behind the scenes. They’re the glue of the program. Their impact isn’t always loud, but it’s what drives real team success.

A sports specialization study at UCLA found that 88% of NCAA Division I athletes played an average of two to three sports growing up. I spoke with a Sioux Falls athlete and trainer who have seen the direct impacts of the multi-sport experience.
