Add athletic periods during the school day! Problem solved. Start practice at 2 instead of roughly 3:30.

This is what the University of Houston president and many in academics emphasized years ago when I was there. Athletic success increases prestige. It increases your reach, interest, and name recognition. Often, leading to better students and a boost in alumni donations.

Ben McCollum on how he thinks prospective high school and portal players will perceive Iowa, considering what the program is accomplishing this season: “If you’re a tough dude, this is a good spot for you. If you’re soft and you like yourself way too much, this is probably not the spot for you. We just try to recruit tough dudes that want to be part of something bigger than themselves, and hopefully people see that.”

Class of 2026. I think this message is important to share with you before your Senior Year of Football. You don’t realize it now but someday you will. It’s going to be one of the most amazing times of your life. You’re going to have a town, a community following you and watching your every move. Take a look around, see all the kids that show up to support you. You were once one of those little kids that played football during the game, looking at the boys on the field as if they were Gods. Thank your family and support system for supporting you to become the player you are now. They went thru a lot to get you here, you didn’t do this alone. Tell them that because at the end of the day they are the ones that will be there for you after all this passes. They believe in you. I’m 36 years old and I still think about it often. The memories you have with your brothers and what you achieve because of the hard work you put in for years and years. Do all you can to leave everything on the field. Become the leader you once saw from an older teammate. Sit down and look around from time to time, take in the moments for they will be memories you’ll have for a lifetime. Focus on your team now, not recruiting. This is the best team sport in the world. It’s time to focus like there is no tomorrow, you never know when there is no tomorrow in your football playing career. ✌🏼

SIK Pre-Season Player to Watch: Josh Rodewald is one of the top returning linemen in Class 2A after a breakout sophomore season at Royal Valley. The 6’2”, 250-pound force on both sides of the ball recorded 63 tackles, 5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, and a pass breakup from his defensive end position. He earned SIK Honorable Mention 2A All-State and was named to the SIK Non-Senior First Team. Rodewald brings power and athleticism, with a 465-pound squat, 275 bench, and a 4.9 40-yard dash. He will be a key piece of a Royal Valley team looking to take a big step in 2025. “I’m really excited to get back out on the field with my boys,” Rodewald said. “It’s been a good offseason where many of us have put in lots of work.
