The rush to 11-a-side football in Ireland is ridiculous. Children arrive to play an age appropriate 5v5 but because the clubs have a few extra players, coaches decide to play 7v7 or even 9v9 instead. More players on the pitch doesn’t create better footballers.

This will reek of cope but this is also true of Ireland. All our best athletes go into GAA. In 2002 when Armagh won the All-Ireland they were joined by Celtic for a training session and the Celtic players were astonished that these amateur sportsmen were in better shape than them

I'm old enough to have seen Maradona but at this point anyone saying Maradona is just trying to be edgy or a hipster or something. He was the best player in the world for 3-4 years. Messi has been that for 20 fucking years ffs. It's not close.

At some point VAR went from eliminating “clear and obvious error” to trying to make the game perfect and it’s starting to ruin the sport

I cannot believe we have got to the point where a ball lightly touching the tips of someone’s hair is being measured by a Snickometer in order to disallow a goal. The ball’s trajectory and spin were not affected at all. The offside law was created to stop goal-hanging - it was never intended to be an exact science. It was never created so that one day artificial intelligence could measure toenails offside and use a snicko to check if someone’s touched a ball. It was created to stop strikers from man-marking goalkeepers all game. VAR was meant to be reserved for clear and obvious decisions. We used to understand that football is better and more entertaining when goals are scored. That meant that for offsides: in case of doubt, the benefit was given to the attacker while in-line was always onside. Now we’re using 3D generated AI technology to check toes to the millimetre and extreme microphones to measure minuscule decibels with the aim of disallowing goals and ruining football as a spectacle. Do they ever ask if we want these changes, do they market test any of it? What an extra time awaited us for the #Portugal v #Croatia game, unfortunately we will never get to see it thanks to the madness that VAR has descended into.

Surely Fifa have got to stop this practice of the entire squad running on to the pitch to celebrate every time their team scores a goal. Why is it being allowed to happen?

@UnlikelyLadone @WingsScotland Agree. The ref was a bit no nonsense. And if McGinn hadn’t thrown his arms and just fell he could have got the penalty. When you throw yourself it confuses the ref as to how much of the extra momentum came from the defender or was created.

@WingsScotland There was contact but I think he "went down" which didn't help his case. It he'd let nature take its course I think he would've been more likely to get it.

The McTominay one would have been soft, but I cannot see how this isn’t a penalty. No contact with the ball, not shoulder-to-shoulder, goes right across him and knocks him over when McGinn’s going past him and has no reason to dive. A review at a minimum.

@sullivansa1 You're right. Former olympians should become hermits. They shouldn't engage in any sports at any level. They've had their time. We should allow cross-dressing men to dominate the womens category instead. 🙄

Is it "fair" that a former funded GB athlete with all the advantage of resourced training, kit sponsorship etc will go to whatever lengths she can to beat every woman on a list just to feed what appears to be a bruised ego. Former elite athletes tend to be ruthlessly selfish especially when they havn't quite achieved what they thought they should have

I call out the women just as vociferously - even in this thread - because it is beyond my comprehension that they are undoing all the rights women fought for in the decades before us. But, this specific post was directed at the 99.9% male responses Sharron, Tracy, Mara, and I have received since the Women’s Sport Union announced its intentions to seek legal recourse. In this thread, I have pushed back on the few women who defend the unfairness because they are part of the problem.

For all the men who seem inexplicably outraged that women might want fairness in Parkrun, here is a short primer: Social/Fun run: 1. No categories. Everyone runs together. (Why have categories if this is just for fun, right?) 2. Results are not recorded. IF there is a timing clock, it is simply there so you can record your time for personal reference to see if you are improving. 3. Any time that you “achieve” cannot be used for “placing,” “records,” or entry into another event that requires a “qualifying time.” Race: 1. Participants register in the appropriate category to ensure fairness. 2. Times are recorded and saved in a database. 3. Participants are ranked by finishing time in their respective category, and results are published. 4. Results are available to the competitors/public/media. These results are used by participants/public/media to declare the achievement of records and/or the meeting of requirements for future races. So, which one is Parkrun?
