Louie spoke about the pitfalls of continually testing/tracking to avoid high stress and emotional states through training and, As he said, “Yes, you are maxing you, with as little emotion as possible” Same can be said if always “record, rank, and publish”. Emotional peaks and arousal levels should be controlled and rotated just like any training variable. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t track numbers, just use more as monitoring source for decisions. Record, evaluate, and adjust > record, rank, and publish
Speed & Hurdle Coach@Tier1athlete

Speed development is still sprinting. Don't need to time it. Track coaches are not timing every single sprint. Many say you must record, rank & time. That is false.

@Tier1athlete @CoachNiklos One aspect i noticed when i was timing sprints. Kids were chasin times and if they didn’t hit it they would get down or try and force it next time. Removed the stopwatch focused on executing what we practice; accel tape drill, max v wickets, how to transition etc.Times got faster

@CoachNiklos The importance of the mental & how athletes view & see things is critical. So many forget the emotional piece to

@CoachNiklos true.. but he also wanted them rotating lifts & setting records constantly. Only ranked & published the competition lifts in competition though. but again, he praised others for testing, ranking, publishing because its a different population.

Agreed to an extent, but louie emphasized progress without the emotional stress that are associated with it. Which like you said rotated so many exercises of different mechanical stress levels. I think the underlying idea is ensuring the we accommodate the stress levels that go with it. Record, yes. Rank and publish is where the stress can lie, both good and bad

@CoachNiklos i think that where you things like VBT come into play. Between being able to set either weight PR, avg velo pr, peak velo pr, jump prs, sprint prs, etc it makes it easy to break a record every time in the gym. Louie talked about breaking records constantly.

@CoachNiklos about his specific powerlifters, not everyone else. and what did louie have the board for? to record, rank & publish

I think that’s where understanding the proper dose of arousal/stress levels to adolescents is imperative. College+ athletes understand PRs won’t be linear, but hard for HS athletes to understand the undulation that comes with timing and the stresses that come with wanting to improve every day. Dose them too much = psychological fatigue, dose too little = not prepared for competition.

@CoachNiklos thing is, we arent training world class lifters. We are training young athletes for the most part, big difference. Louie also praised Jared Bidne multiple times & his use of vbt, jump mats & timing gates. You wont find a bigger louie fan than me, but sometimes he was talking

That was the last trend. It went “you can be strong as you want but if you can apply skill appropriately then you won’t be elite.” And now that everyone is copying “environments” not drills, it’s been moved to “you can do all the skill training you want but if you don’t have a baseline of strength then you won’t be elite” It’s a vicious cycle 😂 in the private sector to separate yourself from the next man.

Over a decade in the industry. I think it’s funny when people try to take a step at you because you’re not a college/pro coach or don’t train those clients. I’ll sit here and laugh and go back and see what all of these kids have done over the last ten + years. Scholarship and all

@CoachZackJ74 Also hot take, going to upset people. The parent and sport coach probably have the same qualifications to coach the athlete in the weight room, none. 🤷‍♂️

Hot take, going to upset people. Parent: Coach, what does he need to do to get more playing time? Had him in the weight room with me all winter and hired a trainer. Coach: I wasn't good enough to coach him in the weight room, I don't know why I'm good enough to figure out PT.
