The best assistant coaches do three things well: 1. Support the head coach publicly 2. Challenge the head coach privately 3. Serve the players daily Loyalty doesn’t mean silence. It means alignment and trust.

Shane Battier shares a must-listen on what it really means to be a champion, how to be a great teammate, and how to make an impact. "The sign says, 'Champions are made when no one is looking.' I sorta laugh at that sign because there is no better sign to sum up my career than that. I lived that literally." Here's why: "My last few years in the NBA, I was first or last, depending on how you look at it - in a stat called time per possession...I was the NBA's version of hot potato." Then he did the math: "I found out that 98% of the time I was on the court, I didn't touch the ball. Only 2% of the time I actually physically touched it." "Most people watch the player with the ball or guarding the ball. So literally, when I say 'champions are made when no one's watching' - no one is watching me for 98% of the time." "But yet I was an integral part of my team. I was an integral piece in my coach's sweat when I didn't play." How did he do it? "I always looked at ways to impact the game. Boxing out. Taking charges. Sexy plays like running back on defense. All of these made up my 98% of time spent away from the ball." 98% invisible, but 100% essential. You don't have to score to make an impact on the game. The best teammates own their role. They are willing to put the team first over individual glory. (🎥 The Nantucket Project)

"You got to love football. You got to wake up every day with a passion about it. You got love showing up and lifting, running, puking, gaining weight, drinking protein shakes. You got to be obsessed with it." -- Kenny Dillingham - via @Fox10Phoenix @Blakes_Take2

Dang, I’m really starting to like Cignetti. I never did understand coaches bragging about working from 4 AM until 11 PM. Like, in what world is that healthy…or even necessary? Major props to Cig.

One of the most powerful mindset shifts you can make is this: Assume people are doing the best they can with the tools they have in that moment. You have no idea what someone is carrying when they show up — the pressure, the fear, the stress, the things they don’t talk about. What you see is behavior. What you don’t see is the battle behind it. Giving people grace doesn’t mean lowering standards or ignoring accountability. It means leading with empathy before judgment. The strongest leaders I know aren’t the quickest to criticize — they’re the quickest to understand. They pause. They listen. They respond with intention. Grace costs you nothing. And it often gives others exactly what they need to keep going. Lead with grace. You’ll elevate everyone — including yourself.

Curt Cignetti recruits production, not potential. Toughness first… availability matters. It’s never about raw talent, it’s about habits, discipline, and why you show up. Production beats potential every single time. ⬇️

Kirby Smart shares the trait that the great players have that average players lack. "Constructive criticism is good for you to develop." "Most of our good players...they embrace it." The best don't run from hard coaching - they seek it out. If you want to grow, be coachable. You can't reach your potential without feedback. (🎥@joshpatecfb)
