All of us have days where we’re down… hurting… frustrated… or just over it. And most of the time, we didn’t choose that day. It showed up. What’s interesting is what we tend to do next. We drift toward what’s easy, not what’s helpful. We reach for what numbs, not what heals. We choose what feels good in the moment, even if it costs us later. And if you really stop and think about it… it’s strange. Why do we believe something unhelpful, unhealthy, or unholy is going to lead to something good? It never does. So what does help? Not complicated things. Consistent things. Rest Your body and mind are connected. When you’re worn down physically, everything feels heavier emotionally. You don’t think as clearly. You don’t respond as patiently. You don’t see things accurately. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is get real rest. Not scrolling. Not zoning out. Actual rest. Eat Good Fuel matters. What you put in your body affects your energy, your focus, and even your outlook. When you’re already struggling, don’t make it harder by running on empty or filling up on things that leave you feeling worse. Take care of yourself here. It’s not small. It’s foundational. Don’t Isolate Isolation lies to you. It convinces you that you’re alone, that no one understands, that pulling back will protect you. It won’t. It only amplifies what you’re feeling. You don’t have to tell everyone everything, but you do need someone. A conversation can shift more than you think. Get a Good Playlist What you listen to matters. Music has a way of shaping your mindset without you even realizing it. Build a playlist that lifts you, centers you, and reminds you of truth. Don’t let your worst days be filled with the wrong soundtrack. Get in the Word Your feelings are real, but they’re not always reliable. You need something steady when everything else feels shaky. Time in God’s Word brings clarity, perspective, and truth back into focus. It doesn’t always change your circumstances immediately, but it changes how you see them… and that changes everything. You may not get to choose every hard day. But you do get to choose how you respond. And those choices… they don’t just get you through the day. They shape who you become.

Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco 49ers Head Coach, on the difference between a coach who wants to be liked and one who actually makes you better. -Every recruit has people telling them they're great right now. That's not coaching -The best coaches aren't the ones you like most. They're the ones who make you uncomfortable enough to grow

It’s a Friday night in college baseball. The lights are on. The stadium is full. The Friday night starter takes the mound, and everything about him says elite. His command is sharp. His presence is steady. He’s prepared for this all week, and it shows. Seven innings later, he walks off. Job done. But what most people never see is what happens next. The game ends, the adrenaline fades, and a different set of decisions begins. There’s a path that’s easy. Teammates go out. It turns into a late night, a few drinks, not much sleep. And there’s another path that’s quieter. Hydrate. Refuel. Get home. Go to bed. And that choice matters more than people think. Because recovery is where the next performance is built. Deep sleep is when the body releases growth hormone, repairs muscle tissue, and resets the nervous system. When that’s disrupted, recovery slows. Add alcohol, and it compounds the problem. Sleep quality drops, dehydration increases, and muscle repair is impaired. It doesn’t always show up immediately, but over the next few days, it does. Velocity dips. Command slips. The arm feels heavier than it should. And now the next start is already affected. At that level, talent matters. Preparation matters. But so do the decisions no one sees. And the same is true in your life. You don’t step into excellence by accident. You build it with what you choose when no one is watching. The way you spend your time. The habits you repeat. The discipline you show when it would be easier not to. Those small decisions feel insignificant in the moment, but they stack. And over time, they either move you forward or quietly pull you back. What you do after the moment… is what determines the next one.

Yesterday was Jackie Robinson Day in baseball. One of the best days of the year in sports. It’s more than a celebration of a player. It’s a reminder of courage, conviction, and composure under pressure. I was on the Steve Marsten Show yesterday talking leadership, and he asked me about Jackie Robinson. My mind immediately went to a powerful moment from his story. When Branch Rickey was preparing Jackie to become the first Black Major League Baseball player, he knew he was stepping into a moment that would bring intense criticism, hostility, and scrutiny. So he didn’t just talk about talent. He talked about toughness. And he said, “I don’t need a player with the guts to fight back. I’m looking for a ballplayer with guts enough not to fight back.” That’s a different kind of strength. Because everything in us wants to react, to defend, to prove a point, to get even. But Robinson’s greatness wasn’t just in how he played. It was in how he endured. I want to be clear about something. I don’t believe I have ever faced racism in my life. I don’t know what that kind of hatred feels like, and I hope I never do. But I do know what it feels like to be challenged, to be misunderstood, to be frustrated, to want to respond in the moment. And so do you. We all have moments where the pressure builds and emotions rise, moments where the easy response is the wrong one. That’s where discipline shows up. That’s where strength is revealed. Real strength isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s quiet restraint. It’s choosing not to say what you could say, not to do what you feel like doing, not to react the way everyone expects. It’s staying the course when it would be easier to step off, holding your standard when others lower theirs, responding with purpose instead of emotion. Anyone can react. Not everyone can respond. That’s the kind of strength that shows up when it matters most, and Jackie Robinson proved it. He didn’t just step into that moment and endure it. He excelled in it. Rookie of the Year. The restraint didn’t hold him back. It set him apart.

Don’t waste today. It’s easier to do than you think. You barely notice when you drift. When you get distracted. When you disengage. When discouragement quietly settles in. The three killers of an effective day: 1. Distraction It pulls your attention away from what matters most. Little interruptions… that lead to big losses. 2. Disengagement You’re present, but not invested. Going through the motions instead of bringing intention. 3. Discouragement It drains your energy and convinces you it doesn’t matter. So you stop pushing, stop focusing, stop trying. Most days aren’t lost all at once. They’re lost slowly. One distracted moment. One checked-out decision. One discouraged thought at a time. But the same is true in reverse. One focused step. One intentional action. One decision to stay engaged. That’s how a day is won. And today is still in front of you.

Today is the 100th day of the year. That makes it a perfect time to reflect, recalibrate, and if needed, redirect. Here are 10 questions to ask yourself: 1. Am I moving with intention or just staying busy? 2. What habits are shaping my days right now? 3. Where am I settling for average instead of pursuing excellence? 4. What have I been avoiding that I need to address? 5. Are my daily actions aligned with where I want to go? 6. Who is influencing my thinking and direction? 7. What distractions are pulling me off course? 8. Where do I need more discipline right now? 9. What is one adjustment I need to make immediately? 10. If I keep going like this, where will I end up? Direction determines destination. You can’t take average steps and expect excellent outcomes. Make the adjustment. Stay intentional. Finish Empty!

Everybody wants discipline… until discipline gets loud.
Everybody wants toughness… until toughness gets uncomfortable. Hard coaching isn’t abuse.
Hard coaching is correction.
Hard coaching is standards.
Hard coaching is loving a kid enough not to let him stay average. If a coach is demanding effort, detail, toughness, and accountability bothers you… that probably says more about today’s culture than it does the coach.

'Pistol Pete' Maravich sharing his testimony of faith in Jesus Christ in 1987 less than one year before his death at the age of 40: "I want all of you to know this tonight about Peter Maravich. You may never have heard of me. It makes no difference. I'm just one person on this earth saved by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. I want you to know this, that the change that came into my life was Jesus Christ. It was not winning. I won all my life. I won every trophy, award, everything you can think of, but every time I won something, I wanted something more. I had to win again. It wasn't money, because money'll buy you everything but happiness. It'll pay your fare at every place but Heaven. Material things—I've driven everything some of you strive for from Rolls Royces to BMWs to Mercedes to Porsches. It wasn't religion because in the name of religion, Jesus Christ was placed upon that cross. And the purest thing about Christianity is the fact that it's your choice. You can't work. You can't earn. I knew that, and I understood it now. I want you to know this. The last thing I'd like to say is this, next week I'll be inducted into the Hall of Fame. I'll get that big ring. In fact, it's a bigger ring than I would have got for the championship, but I'll tell you something about all the awards. They all pale to the glory of Christ and what He's done in my life. It's amazing what He has done in my life. I wouldn't trade my position in Christ for a thousand NBA championships or a thousand Hall of Fame rings or for a hundred billion dollars. There's nothing like the joy of Jesus Christ in your life."
