@RepoleStable Would moving the Breeders’ Cup to September kill the Keeneland fall meet in Kentucky, where those most invested in the breeding and selling industries of thoroughbred racing, would suffer? Wouldn’t the first week of December make more sense for a breeders cup races?

🚨🔔 MUST READ…The Commissioner’s proposal for a new racing schedule… Let’s try and change this game together and make racing great again!!!!! It’s important for me that fans, horseplayers, trainers, industry leaders, owners, media, etc. share their opinions and ideas on this subject. Off this incredible, record-setting viewership from this year’s Kentucky Derby, with over 20 million viewers… As Commissioner of racing, one thing I’d plan on doing is reworking the racing calendar. After the Kentucky Derby, I would move the Belmont Stakes to the second leg of the Triple Crown, possibly moving it up one week from its current date and giving more time for horses to recover and train for their next start. The Preakness being run two weeks after the Kentucky Derby, in this new day and age in racing, shows the lack of vision and leadership needed to evolve this sport. I expect the top three finishers of this year’s Derby to skip the Preakness and go right to the Belmont. If you want these horses to run for a longer period of time, and even as 4YOs, you must take the pressure off of every trainer and owner to make a mistake and run a horse back too soon. Four weeks after the Belmont, I’d move the Preakness to the last leg. If they wouldn’t want to move, we could replace the Preakness with the Haskell. This will also carry viewers from the Derby as more familiar names would likely run in all three races. I think in this scenario, we will have between 5-10 million viewers for the Belmont and Preakness/Haskell. I would also ride the momentum of the Kentucky Oaks and celebrate the fillies as much as the colts with the first real Fillies Triple Crown - the Triple Tiara - with the Oaks, the Acorn and the Black Eyed Susan. We need to do a better job of celebrating our fillies equally. We then could move into an older horse Triple Crown with significantly increased purse money, which would start with the Stephen Foster, then the Whitney and the Breeders’ Cup Classic. I would move the currently declining @BreedersCup to the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, the week before the NFL season starts, and a few weeks before college football is in full swing. This would be great for either NBC or Fox, who’d both love to compete for the Breeders Cup media rights on Labor Day weekend. Unfortunately, the stubborn leaders of the Breeders’ Cup seem married to their November dates, running championship races on a Friday (this year on Halloween) when most of America is working and paying no attention, and on Saturday in the heart of college football conference season. And people wonder why the Classic is mid-card, and races change channels or platforms…🤦🏻‍♂️ The viewership of the Breeders’ Cup is embarrassingly less than 1 million. It’s beyond logic to keep it in its current place. The same people from the Jockey Club that are driving this declining industry are the same people driving these dumb decisions at the Breeders’ Cup. I’d take the 2YO Breeders’ Cup races and create a special championship day for them, potentially in December, putting it on the day of the Army-Navy game and giving our juveniles some additional time to prepare and mature. This would also leave room for other meaningful and interesting stakes in October and November. We now have a season that starts with the Pegasus, goes through Triple Crown preps, a better spaced Triple Crown season, a formal Triple Tiara, an older horse “Triple Crown” focus, the Breeders’ Cup in September, good stakes races in October and November and our 2YO championships in December. I know my style is not for everyone, but I am passionate about making this game better…for everyone. Please share your thoughts. One week ago the Pope girls and I came HOME to UK to start the greatest adventure of our lives. It has been a whirlwind of awesomeness—that’s what Kentucky basketball IS! It’s the pinnacle of basketball. And BBN has gone straight next level in redefining southern hospitality! Thank you! We are immersed in the work. We will be relentless. We know the assignment! We will ALL do this together. Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude. We are home. On this sacred Sunday morning I am also filled with immense gratitude for the blessings that have lead us here. BYU will always be an incredibly special place to our family. Soon after we arrived at BYU one mentor told me that “BYU had more to offer me than I had to offer BYU.” Those words proved to be SO true as we felt the BYU experience change our lives for the better. It’s overwhelming to reflect on the countless lifelong friendships that we forged at BYU. We are SO grateful. I’m a believer. I believe God’s plans for our lives our way bigger than our own. Happy Sunday BBN! Lets go!!
