The Gortat Screen has been activated during March Madness. Sharing a few different clips of tournament teams implementing this concept and where it's been most effective. But, it's really just a moving screen, right? coachsclimb.com/2026/03/26/the…

Mike Conley on what basketball intelligence is to him. (Really good long quote, on being a point guard) “It’s an understanding of the game that’s a little bit deeper than just playing really fast… it’s a understanding of feel, like Donte has made 2 in a row, let’s get him his third shot or Ant hasn’t had a shot in 5 possessions let’s get Ant a shot or how can I get him an easy bucket or decision making, you got a 3 on 1 fast break and you got one guy whose cold and you need him to get hot and you got another guy who has made a couple, you go hey let me try and get an easy one for the guy who hasn’t made a shot… if you have a high IQ you can kind of see the play develop, you know what’s going to happen and you can start talking your way in and out of situations”

A quiet trend in college this season has been teams playing above the nail on offense. This stresses the help, particularly teams who play packline. Hedging screens results in automatic Gator cues (pass at the POA and slip the screen) or long closeouts due to better passing angles. Step up screens, stack out and pistol actions are starting to replace zoom and Spain as the dominant 3 man actions. Arizona has distorted their spacing out of the Tommy Lloyd BS continuity, pushing the screens to the slot and playing a ton of delay/delay into DHO. This generates more space to shake or cut, countering teams beginning to help or peel off of the strong side corner, among other advantages. This was my favorite action from them in last nights’ game. Almost an impossible action to send effective help against. 👇🏼 Arizona Zipper | Reject | Burn Cut

Love it! And then on the flip side you have someone like Brad Underwood who has completely transformed his style of play into an equally successful stretch. Two different mindsets attacking what gives their team/program the best opportunity to be successful and committed to it.

"I haven't flinched. I'm playing the same exact style [...] and I'm doubling down on it. I'm not worried about trends." 🗣️ Tommy Lloyd staying ten toes down as he spoke after Arizona's Sweet 16 win. #MarchMadness

Coach AJ 🎯 Mental Fitness
Ben McCollum shares what it feels like to be around first-place people and a first-place culture. "I went to Northwest Missouri State, and my first practice with Steve Tapmeyer - best coach I've ever been around - I sat there and I'm like, 'This is what first place feels like. This is what a first-place culture feels like. This is what first-place people feel like.'" That was the wake-up call. He realized what first-place people have: "They've got an extreme work ethic. They've got an edge to 'em that other people don't - a competitive spirit." Then he quoted John Thompson: "You can tame a fool a lot quicker than you can resurrect a corpse...We want guys with a little edge to 'em." You can coach skills, but you can't coach competitive spirit. You don't want to consistently coach their effort and attitude. The last thing they look for: Energy givers. "Over the years, we found that guys that are moody don't make it in our program." "If you're moody, if you have low energy, if you suck the life out of the building - you don't make it." Talent isn't enough. Your energy matters. Your attitude matters. Successful people have a competitive edge, they bring energy, and they look to consistently get better. They raise the standard through what they do. (🎥 Watts Happening Podcast)

Ben McCollum knows that to change your team - it starts with the people and the culture. • 4 national titles at Northwest Missouri State. • Drake's first NCAA win in 50 years. Now Iowa's first Sweet 16 in 27 years. Here's how he builds culture: (📌Bookmark this)

Love the approach by Iowa caging 2 on the ball to finish the game. And Lee was still quick enough to get the edge. High level hoops between those two teams & coaches!

Don’t disagree with Self’s tactics whatsoever. But is there something to be said philosophically to leave a foul to give at the end so players don’t play not to foul on the final possession?

Going to see a lot of quick hitters called for scorers over the next couple weeks. Reminded of the principle that any play called for you has earned you the right to read the defense, not shoot.
